I recently launched a Q&A / discussions site with the intention of people being able to come together to chat about pretty much anything that interests them. There are other similar sites out there but none quite the same. Am I too late to get into this with sites like Yahoo Answers ruling the roost?

There's no such thing as too late. It depends on your marketing and promotion strategy to beat your competitors..

I wouldn't say you are too late, as anyone can have a go at anything and it can take off. Like what Adie Said "It depends on your marketing and promotion strategy to beat your competitors"

One thing I would say is that Yahoo is a Huge Corporation and has alot of resources to hand. They have entire markeitng teams etc all working out the best ways to improve there services. I think the only way you could make something of a Q&A website/forum is if by targeting a certain Niche. e.g. Making Money online Q&A. Or you need to have something unique that nobody else has!

This way you aren't bieng to broad about what subjects you want your users to be asking about and also you will be able to market it etc... alot easier.

      Hope it Goes Well!

    • Everyone is right. There's NO such thing as too late. Difficult, yes, but not too late.

What you have to do is research your competitors down to a T. See how they are marketing their site. See what seems to work, what doesn't and work your tail off out marketing them.

That's what success in business is all about anyway....just do a better job marketing, deliver on your promises and you'll be fine.

My main competitor as I see it is an old well established site called The Answer Bank

What is the best way to research their marketing methods in your opinion?

Exactly - it all depends on your slant and whether you can create a specialized site that caters to a specific audience. It's always a lot easier to start off with smaller niche based communities and then expand out than it is to throw a wide net out and try to adjust a live site based on your audience.

Just keep focusing on driving traffic to your site.

Sometimes you just have to stick around long enough for things to snowball out of control.

If you are passionate about your site then stick with it and make it priority.

You can always find ways of attracting visitors to it by coming up with creating ways to make your site stand out from the rest.

Not everyone will like Yahoo answers anyway.

There are so many newcomers to the Internet that are looking for answers to things that they may not even know about Yahoo answers anyway.

Just think about that and capture the ones who are new to using the Internet.

Good luck with it and all the best with your future efforts!!!

No, you are not too late. You are never too late. Even though there are competitors everywhere, but focus on your content and driving your traffic source - and sure it'll grow into a big tree.

    Great idea by the way!

    Best of luck!

I agree with everyone you are not too late. Take a moment and look at what you are trying to accomplish. Yes Yahoo is a huge entity, but ask yourself how your idea is different. What makes your idea more appealing than yahoo? What benefits (fun, social, interactive, knowledge, etc etc) would people get from your idea that they would not from Yahoo and others.

Basically like everyone said traffic, traffic, traffic, However no matter how much traffic you get your idea has to be appealing and inviting. Add your twist to it, what you want in an idea like you have, and if you stand out then you will get visitors.

      Good luck...

Not too late, everything you do you gain some experience to take onto your next venture.

Yahoo answers is huge and they seem to appear a lot when ever I search for something in Google, so the potential for traffic on Q&A sites is immense.

I would go down the Q&A route but focus on one subject matter, instead of a load of general questions, that's a better way for one person to compete with all the other Q&A sites.

  • I agree that you have big competitors but that doesn't mean you are late. Your business success depends on you not on your competitors. In each business you will find big boys out there.

This is like asking if it's too late to launch a website because there are so many of them around now.

But choose a niche - you can always branch out later if you like - because you need a passionate base of users for this project to work, or you'll be stuck with the dreaded "empty forum" syndrome.

    Good luck!
