Let's say for your service, there are two types of niches. Let's call them X and Y. X is proven to hire consultants in the area yesterday, today, or tomorrow. However, since most consultants compete for opportunities in X, their value is commoditized. Y is proven to benefit from these types of consultants. However, since Y don't typically hire these consultants out of the blue, it's going to be a tough sell. Knowing this observation, would you even bother investigating this idea? If so, which of X or Y would you pick?

I hope this isn't too vague of a question.

maybe a little to vague, but this sounds like something someone asked Jay Abraham once. in their example wholesaler(W) sold from their business directly to other retailers let's call them (R), the problem was that the wholesalers(W) were very good at selling to the retailers(R), and the end users loved the products but had a hard time setting it up, so the retailers(R) would tend to be overstocked.

Jay's advice within seconds was to have the wholesalers(W) create turnkey packages and offer installation to the end users, and sell this added value service to the retailers(R) - so the retailers could could continue to buy wholesale, and if the end user required setup they could pay a little more for the turn key package - this also makes the end users love the retailers and the retailer love the wholesaler because they offered this unique option that none of the other wholesalers were offering.

so maybe this might help with what you were asking.

Thanks for the explanation. In essence of the Jay Abraham example, do all 3 parties benefit b/c W can charge more for the installation service (i.e. providing value with their domain knowledge), R can keep customers happy while helping W distribute with their networks and distribution reach, and customers can spend less time figuring out how to install the damn thing?

I thought X and Y were male sex chromosomes

OP, it's all a bit garbled. Perhaps you could explain better by telling us the niche(s) in question. You might get opinions and advice then.

Now the W chromosome is another matter. The W chromosome is predicted to be subject to strong female-specific selection stemming from its female-limited inheritance and therefore should play an important role in female fitness traits. However, the overall importance of directional selection in shaping the W chromosome is unknown because of the powerful degradative forces that act to decay the nonrecombining sections of the genome.

Whilst for those of you still hanging on my every word and interested in chromosome R . . .

The physical map of chromosome R was constructed using the data from 210 probes. Chromosome R contains 41 Assembly 19 sequence contigs. The minimum size of this chromosome is 2,287,713 bp as determined in the Assembly 20 contig; this includes only one copy of the rDNA.

Niche is a verb now? It just gets worse.

Why can't "niching" be a verb?

lol at the RNA/DNA response, you guys crack me up.

@stanigator, ofcourse all parties would benefit.

the end users can choose the DIY option or pay a little extra for the done-for-you version depending on their budget, and ability to set it up.

the retailers won't have so much stock - as they can focus on sales and marketing, and of course the wholesalers can provide done-for-them marketing or simply provide advertising materials like posters and fliers and branded items like mousepads or calendars, etc.(so the wholesalers would have one or more price points as well)

and the wholesaler also get to sell more stock - and all parties end up with more sales and a deeper relationship - and have also made their product/service less of a commodity because of the extra options and value that their competitors are probably not offering yet

    hope this helps
