I had an account here many years ago and let it lapse. Joined back here a few weeks ago and boy has it changed. The clever bright pioneers have gone, and save for a core dire-hard set of IMers all I see on here is dross trying to hit the minimum number of posts to get a signature!

It's impossible to have a decent conversation about IM because half the time I don't even get the point of the post!

I'm either old or stupid. Or possibly both!

Yeah, this forum seems to be getting overrun with spammers these days. I'm really getting sick of it.

I think WF needs to revise its rules and only allow posting of live links (in posts and signatures) after a certain number of minimum posts. This might cut down on the number of people who try to spam this forum with such banal cr*p.

Only Joking. Seriously though, it should be at least 100 or even 150 posts. It won't stop the spam of course, but it will cut down on it dramatically. Genuine new members won't be put off by the new post count rules if they've joined WF to both learn and contribute, and have to wait longer for live links. Will they? :rolleyes:

Haha that's good. Hey no problem with 200 or 500 or whatever. You don't see me pimping any cr*p in my signature do you? Oh wait...this is my 200th post...I guess I'm in now anyway!

Update 9/14/12: Well, I made my 200th post, then made about 5 or 6 more, then wake up this morning to find I'm back down to 198. Looks like one of the threads I was commenting on was deleted...so bye bye posts! :p

Yep, I try to provide value in every post. Although admittedly, I have thrown in a few pithy 1-liners on occasion. And I also admit I've b*tched about a few things now and again (and deservedly got the posts deleted) so I'm not perfect...yet!

Thanls for the reminder Ken, a couple of days ago there was one guy in particular who started around 10 threads with different topics and someone kept responding "stop spamming this forum" or something like that.

I guess that's the kind of situation you want to avoid, as I checked out a couple of the threads due to seeing a response from someone.

Not everyone can, and what is a spammer in here isn't always a spammer on another website. Keep in mind that 419 scams still capture millions of dollars per year, so spam recognition isn't as widespread as you would think

Spammers in WF are obvious. Scammers are not and 419 scam uses different tactics through emails.

Don't sweat it, Andrew. If it smells like spam to you, report it.

If a certain number of people report it, it leaves the public view and goes into a queue for moderation. If the mod that draws it thinks it's okay, it goes back on public view. If they agree that it's hinky, it disappears forever and the spammer is dealt with.

I've reported threads that went on to lead long lives, so don't worry that you'll screw someone over by reporting them.
