Hi folks, help me solve a Traffic Conundrum!

OK, the standard advice for niche marketing (which I've given many times myself) is: Go where your prospects are. Guest blogging, article submission, forum marketing, etc. all work under this principle.

But...what if your best prospects are absolute beginners in a particular niche -- so much so that they probably aren't yet visiting other niche sites, forums or blogs?

In real-life terms, here's what I'm saying:

I run a site that teaches people how to become children's book writers. Our best prospects are, and have always been, people who dream of writing a children's book, but don't know how. Now, clearly, SEO is a big deal in this case, and we do pretty much own every key phrase in our area. If you type "how to write children's books" or anything similar into Google, we're either first or second. That's great, but there's not that much search volume.

Sooo... I need to get more traffic and reach these folks, but they don't really exist as a cohesive audience. There are no "places" to reach them. I do have some demographics (most are women, age 30-50) so that's a start. But beyond that, it's picking needles from haystacks.

What say you, o' wide folks of the Warrior Board?

Thanks!

You really need to get more in depth demographics and then figure out where your target group is hanging out. You would be surprised at the group I targeted at a coupon cutter site and actually did better than SEO with a banner ad there.

The group was actually male oriented and nothing to do with coupons but their wi8ves were telling them about the banner or actually clicking and buying for them.

Can you expand on this, please? How did you see in your demographics that a coupon cutter site would be useful?

Beyond age and gender (which I have) what demos would be most useful -- and then how do I use that info to find just the right places?

      Thanks....

I saw that the perfect customer was male ages 25 to 35 (or around that) married with an estimated yearly income of less than $20,000. Not making any more than that a year we were almost positive their wives were saving money any way they could.

We actually targeted the wives cause if momma is not happy .. nobody happy.

Thanks Tony. What's the best tool to uncover demographics, in your opinion?

My assistant. I don't ask her where she gets the info. If she says she needs the resource .. she gets it because she has proven over and over she is better at this task than I am.

The "Community > Classes" section of your local Craigslist.

USPS's new "every door" mail service to send a flier to residential communities which match your demographics.

Fliers hung in community centers / city halls / college campus bulletin boards.

And here's me thinking I'll check out your sig link to: Dreaming About Writing a Children's Book & Getting It Published? as my daughter aspires to write children's books.

Not quite what I was expecting but hey, in the words of the link destination, F*CK MIDDLE AGE. LETS ROCK.

Why not just opt in for a higher traffic keyword that is related? Since you clearly understand SEO, go for a higher comp keyword. It may be in a broader range, but will give you more traffic from the net with people that are just wanting to write books, not necessarily children's books either.

They may not know how {lucrative, easy} a children's book is to write...btw, I'm not saying its easy, but hopefully your site can show that. With a broader traffic range you may get a lot of "undecided" would be authors on the type of book they want to write.

    Jon,

You are only limited by your creativity. Since you are catering to a very small pocket of people, I recommend you expand your focus / attention on the psychographics and demographics of your ideal group of peeps.

What I mean by that: --> Instead of doing the "obvious" things and going where they are, you will have to invent a type of advertisement that appeals to a bigger group of peeps who may likely develop an interest in your niche of expertise.

You could right ads to the tune of:
