How often should I ping?

I've been trying to add new content to my free content sites (blogger, Squidoo, Zimbio) Then, I have been pinging the RSS feeds on these blogs

Been doing this every day.

Is this necessary?

I ping every new page I create, plus I ping whenever I get comments. I do not ping on a schedule, only when I update something.

when pinging do u ping your main url or the exact page of the update?

Just the main URL

I only do this for free blog sites

Try pinging when you update.....try updating on a regular basis, whether once a day or once a week or whatever..do it regularly.
