Weight Loss for Brides Getting Married on Sunday in June? Just How Broad (or Narrow) is Your Niche?

I know the SEO targeted days of marketing had us all focusing on the narrowest of the narrow niches so that we could find search keywords that were easier for us to rank for within that niche. With the onslaught of the Google Zoo Army has any of that changed for you?

For instance if you wanted to build a site around weight loss how detailed would your niche be from the choices below:

a. weight loss
b. weight loss for women
c. weight loss for soon to be brides
d. lose 20 pounds by your wedding in June
e. Weight Loss for Brides Getting Married on Sunday in June

Feel free to give other examples of how narrow or broad you think a niche should be and expand as much as you wish on your answer.

With the recent bashing of micro niche sites, is it better to go for a niche that is broad so that you can build a healthy authority site around it? Or is it better to become an authority site within a micro niche? Please share your thoughts.

    I would go with:

    b. weight loss for women
    c. weight loss for soon to be brides
    d. lose 20 pounds by your wedding in June
    e. Weight Loss for Brides Getting Married on Sunday in June

So many ways you expand on that with your site and never run out of things to write about. You could expand into weight loss cooking ideas for women, etc for example. Weight loss alone is too broad, but you change the market for women and you provide content for their reading engagement tailored to them and it's a perfect fit. That's actually one of the models for one of my sites, but it's not in the weight loss niche.

      Well of course I did!

So you like to go very narrow on the niche, eh? All the way down to a specific plan. And I guess we could market products that make doing the diet easier? Like hypnosis for success at The Kosher Diet and the best treadmill for even faster results with the diet. And don't forget The Kosher Diet Recipes books including a separate one just for desserts? There are more, I'm sure! We are marketers, after all

      I got ya!

Cinnamon balls. Yuummmmmmmmy (I'm sure they have a proper name, but I've long since forgotten it if they do)

I would suggest that you look at it from the point of view of your customer.

Can you really see some woman sitting down in front of her computer typing in "weight loss for brides getting married on sunday in june"

    I highly doubt it.

However, I think it is reasonable to imagine a woman sitting in front of her computer and typing in "weight loss for brides"

One thing that I notice over and over again is people get so caught up in keywords and the SEO side of things that they forget that there is going to be an actual real living, breathing person on the other end of that computer screen.

Use the Google keyword tool or any other keyword tool, or niche tool, or whatever you want but combine it with some common sense.

the combination of those two things will give you a good idea of how narrow to go.

Excellent response! Thank you I love it when even with all of my smilies and sarcasm I am taken so literally.

So, considering the weight loss for brides getting married on sunday in june niche is a joke, the real question on the table is do you think that weight loss for brides is better or worse than weight loss for women, considering one could allow for a larger more robust authority site with one rather than the other smaller niche of weight loss for brides.

Consider the fact that weight loss for brides might only be a category for a niche as broad as, say, weight loss for women.

The choices are only examples of just how narrow you could make a niche if you really wanted to; or were just a little kooky...

Typically when I build a niche site I'm looking for a keyword that has 3 words that are not in any way related. Or better put about 10 keywords that go with the same theme, but are relatively different "keywords" for each site.

Fantastic! Would you care to give an example of three words that are not in any way related that go in the same theme in regards to weight loss? Not revealing a niche or anything, but just an example so that I might fully understand your meaning?

I agree with Jonathan Davis, I normally pick a keyword that has 3 or more keywords in it. If I am building an authority type site I will use between 5 and 10 related keywords to create articles.

That's the easy part the hard part is finding keywords that makes sense, are buyer keywords, have at least 1K monthly searches and that I can rank in the top 3 of Google.

If you have a particular weight loss product your promoting what you can do is put buy or review in the keyword. These terms are easy to rank if done properly.

    • Darnit, @Alexa Smith I was hoping you would pop in and answer this one, as I am not all that concerned with SEO as a traffic source and wondered how narrow you go with your niches. And somehow you slipped in, thanked @Rosetrees and slipped back out without answering the question! How in the heck did that happen? :p

So this is me, flat out asking ya, how narrow do you go with your niches, my friend?

That's really awesome @birdie28a. I love the idea about doing the bonus or review on the end.

Weight loss for women is the best option. Go too broad and you risk losing alot of money. Go too narrow, and a niche might not exist. Weight loss for woman is within the "goldie locks" zone.
