How to check for demand in Narrow Niches

Hey Guys,

I am doing a research in a popular, evergreen market with an
aim to create a product in it, but rather than aiming it at the whole,
broad market, I am planning to target a narrow niche in it.

For those who've created or promote products in sub-niches,
how do you check how much demand there is for these products?
Google obviously won't show too many numbers for it.

The product would help corporate executives/professionals as
well as entrepreneurs improve a certain skill.

I believe niche forums would be a good place to start, and possibly
Linkedin (particularly for my narrow market).

Where else would you suggest looking at?

Thanks!

One indication of this is SEARCH VOLUME. You can find this information via Google's Keyword selector tool. Spyfu is great too but its a paid tool.

Look and see how many books are being sold on amazon for your subject.

Also, look at the reviews and feedback to get some more information about why people are buying the products and what they like/don't like about them.

Check SEMRush or Google Adwords' keyword tool. If it's a physical product, Spyfu is the answer.

Here's an email I sent to one of my list a whiile ago:

" A couple of weeks ago, I was fed up..

    Why, you ask?

Well, it's simple. I couldn't find a new niche. I was getting a little agitated.

I was bored of been in the same 3 niches that I've been in my whole IM career.

I wanted something new, but I really didn't know where to start searching.. lost.

I was lost. More so than usual. LOL.

Quite frankly, I was sick of just seen the same niche being used over and over again and I wanted to try something a little different.

    You know the feel?

You ever run out of niche ideas or things to try and promote?

Earlier today I was bored so, I thought I would do a little bit of research. So, I started hitting the normal spots like Yahoo answers, YouTube, and board reader and then I made my way over to EzineArticles and our good old friend, Google.

Once I got to EZA and the loveable old search engine (Google) I easily found 15 niches/sub-niches to get into. Now, I only have to find the time to properly set them up and monetize them. Either way, I have enough niche ideas to last me for a while.

    Here is what I did....

I used the search box at EZA, but instead of typing in specific niches, I typed in some generic words. Words that would give me a big assortment of articles. Here are the words I used today.
    • Tips
    • How Can I
    • Ways To
    • Where can i
Now, once you hit the enter button and search through a couple of pages, you will see that there is literally more niche ideas than you can possibly ever need.

But, how do you know what to promote?

Well, the easiest way to do it is to read the articles and follow the resource box to see where they go. When you do this, make note of whether it is an affiliate product or their own. If it is an affiliate product and it looks like something you are interested in, make note of the affiliate network so that you can register for it later.

One other thing that the search phrases are great for is many of the titles that you see in the articles will turn out to be great long tail keywords that you can use to obtain organic traffic.

Something even more powerful with many of the search phrases is that the articles that you find will be full of lists and bullet points. This will give you a ton of research many different topics to use in your article and bum marketing efforts.

Sounds easy, right? Well, It is! If you don't believe me head on over and type the words in the search box for yourself and see just how many niches you can find.

Don't just do this on EZA, but on Google, on YouTube. Anywhere and Everywhere you can make a search.

    Hope this helps!

    Until next time,
    Ryan

Hope that helps you a little, even though EZine is starting to die - it will still work.

Another method is to go to twitter and find tweet volume regarding that particular subject matter/category. This is specially helpful for spotting rising trends.

First you should look at is how many advertisers are there in search results. Then look at organic results to see what they are promoting there. And then look at traffic volume.

Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool in exact match, US only mode. The number shown will be exact searches per month, so you have to divide it by 30 to get an estimate of searches per day. Coach's Keyword Tool shows exact match searches per day for any given keyword phrase and you can use it for free for that purpose.

BTW, one thing people seem to always lump together for competition is the competition for adwords and organic results. These are 100% independent of each other and should not be combined. If you are trying to determine how competitive a keyword phrase is for adwords, just look at the average cost per click and don't worry about how competitive the top 10 organic results are. If you are interested in getting ranked organically, you can ignore the cost of adword ads completely and just look at how solid the top 10 ranking websites are.

      Guys, thanks for the response.

Perhaps I wasn't very clear in my OP.

What I am looking for is:

If I have a narrow niche in, for instance, the Weight Loss market, say "Weight Loss for Brides To Be", how do I check how much the demand is for this sub-niche?

For the above example, I understand such a product would be extremely valuable
for women who are desperate to lose weight before their special day.

But how do you estimate the numbers here? How would you know how many such women are looking to lose flab before their Wedding Day?

Niche Forums, yes. For my actual target market, Linkedin-yes. What other resources would be good to research in?

Again, my product would help Working Professionals and Entrepreneurs improve a valuable skill in them.

      Thanks!

    @Marcinao - ^^ wow .. thats an interesting strategy ..

    Here's one that I thought of ..

Maybe you can use the google keyword tool ... Search for the keyword that your targetted customer might type ... for example the bride to be might type things like .. bridal gowns or plus size bridal gowns .. or maybe even lose weight before wedding .. etc... see the volume ... Altho these number's are not always accurate .. make sure you choose exact match .. and also if you want to verify these number you should do a test ppc campaign for the keyword .. and then look at the number of impressions that ad gets (not the clicks) .. this could give you a much much more accurate number of people interested in a keyword ...

You can also goto google insights ... and see the trends of the searches there ... it'll show you the trend like how often the keywords are typed .. etc... For example ... during summer in the u.s. very rarely would anyone search for 'heaters' ... so you can see the volume low during summers and higher during winters ..etc.

So these two tools might help in my opinion ... I 've heard of people using these two tools in a similar way to do research .. but I haven't used it personally yet ... Anyways .. worth looking into .. and if it helps ... let me know how it works out ! Good luck!

What would your suggestion be if I'm getting low total impressions and clicks on a PPC keyword campaign of 100+ keywords?
