New members red alert?

It may just be coincidence . . .

Although I read and post for the most part on the main forum, I do have regular forays into other sections.

The Off Topic Forum adds a touch of light humour to the end of a long day, and I very occasionally see a sporadic new member introduction posted.

Today I've noticed 8 new member introductions posted in The Off Topic Forum within the space of 20 minutes (5 of them within a 5 minute spell), and 7 of which use the word 'hello' in the title. I found this a highly unusual pattern, particularly in the context of all the recent forum problems with spam attacks on the boards. Could this be some sort of breeding ground where they gain an innocuous foothold on the forum?

It may just be coincidence . . .

Coincidence or some shady forum "marketer" just got his hands on a new piece of software. Talking about low value forum posts, anyone notice users with 1 post posting scraped content from IM blogs or articles? Gotta give the guys using that script/software an A+ for ambition though...... Trying to automate resource posting. /shake head

Without having access to the back end to see IPs, etc we'll just have to wait until they misbehave ... or not. There weren't any cookies in their post or links, so nothing to report.

Well Horny Devil, just probably nonsense spammers whose accounts will be deleted in due course.

Also, posting in the off-topic forum doesn't up your post count, anyway.

I appreciate the post count fact, but the mentality of some spammers wouldn't realise that anyway.

If I had the time I would be interested to see if any pattern trends emerged by studying all introduction or first postings, by all 'new' members, over all forums, over a period of time. If there were any conclusive results to this, spammers accounts could be deleted much quicker.

What makes me highly suspicious, is when you see a WSO thread with a string of glowing testimonials straight after the first post, with all of the posters having registered in 2007, yet only made 3 posts to date.

The thing i love about this forum is that it is full of savvy internet marketers who can smell an act of spam almost before it happens.

Nothing goes unnoticed here and these guys will be caught out at the first hint of a spammy thread.

There are always spammers everywhere. The other forum out there was doing good 3 to 4 years ago but I think the admin and mods got tired and now the forum is full of garbage, while the admin is still cashing out with adsense and useless/expensive monthly membership fees. The good thing about this forum is the thread above that says "YOU Are A Moderator!."
