Fiverr Horror Story - Don't sell tangible goods on Fiverr

Most people probably already know this, but Fiverr sucks for selling items that require shipping.

1) you can charge shipping but they'll take $.20 off of every dollar you charge, so you have to charge more to actually cover your shipping costs.

2) buyers can open Paypal disputes (because it's a tangible good) and Fiverr will roll over and refund the money to the buyer no questions asked. That's how I got screwed out of $44 in sales.

Had a pretty unique gig selling rare earth magnets. This wise guy makes a gig multiple order of 12 gigs, which I was unprepared for, and I told him it would take a few days to ship out. The gig was for 5 days anyway so I had plenty of time. But this dude sends me a message every day asking where it's at. I tell him it's on the way, he tries to cancel. Normally I would accept it, but since I'm selling tangible goods and I had already bought the resupplies, I didn't want to get stuck with a huge amount of unsold product. So I ship his stuff out on Friday, provide tracking info, and mark the gig Delivered.

Anyway, this morning I log in and see the gig has been canceled and $44 refunded to the buyer. I ask customer support why, and they say that a Paypal dispute has been filed and, "there's nothing we can do." Really? How about asking me for proof of shipment before automatically canceling the gigs and screwing me out of $44?

Lesson learned, I'll be transferring my gigs over to Etsy.

bum deal. That's the one thing that frightens me about any paypal transaction, really, or even selling ebooks: the customer can cancel at any time and say whatever they want, even if they received and love what you sold them.

Shipping is risky, we all should be more careful when planning this gig.

When it comes to Fiverr I would stay mainly too some type of service..

Paypal will side with the buyer almost every time.

Fiverr is all about DIGITAL goods and services, bro. Sorry to hear about your loss. But just because you didn't understand what fiverr is about is no justification for Etsy being better. There's a reason why Fiverr is as big as it is.

I think the problem her might be with Paypal.. Fiverr probably knows that they wont win any kind of dispute with Paypal and just doenst even try. However, since your buyer now has the goods and the money, and it was done through the mail...I wonder if a mail fraud complaint would fly...
Id try it. That might convince him to send your money back.

That is not true. It is actually very easy to win a dispute if tracking info is provided to paypal. Fiverr just didn't want to do it for 2 reasons: laziness, why fight for a few dollars and spend time and labor, when we can simply refund. And the second reason is, paypal is stupid, they can close an account when too many disputes are open and I bet fiverr has a LOT of business there, with disputes all the time. And they just want to close most of them asap, because if paypal has to manually review an account too often, they simply ban it(again like fiverr, laziness and comfort over client's happyness and comfort).

Exactly! I very politely asked what I could do to help Fiverr resolve the dispute, and I got this condescending reply from the Rep about how I should work harder to communicate and resolve buyer's problems within Fiverr so that they won't feel compelled to take it to Paypal. I did all those things, but this guy was looking for trouble from the beginning. But Fiverr doesn't give a hoot.

Well they just lost one more seller.

Hmm you might be on to something there. I googled the guy's username and found out he has a bit of a presence on the internets, so he would be easy to get a hold of. I was thinking about sending him a PayPal invoice for the goods.

Honestly though, it's not about the money. Just the fact that he got away with it! The guy was harassing me from the beginning, so I knew he was trouble. On a previous order he tried to give me negative feedback because he said I was rude. I apologized and he removed it, then makes this gigantic order of 12 gigs. And of course Fiverr won't let you cancel an order straight up unless you want to risk negative feedback.

sorry to hear that. But I think, probably the shipping goods through fiverr seems a good side for fiverr's buyer. But again, the risk is too high for something only $4

Yeah, fiverr customer service tends to always listen to the buyer - ultimately alienating a lot of sellers

Not tangible goods, but they really do suck now, after a few good years.
I am having a dispute with them at the minute and the response from them is unbelieveable.

I bought and paid for a gig, the seller prompted me to add extras, which I didn't need, so they cancelled.
Long story short, the gig (a video promo) doesn't exist, it is just a lure into more expensive gigs.
I thought Fiverr support would be horrified, but they took her side.
I know $5 is cheap, but you have it or you don't.

I closed a long-standing account a few months back, now, once this is sorted I will close the remaining one too. Both accounts are/were 100% rating, one for selling and one for buying.

I am disgusted by their attitude, anywhere else this is fraud, but Fiverr just wants to cure everything in the world by refunding your money.

    Rant over

Well, no. At least not originally.

They fully intended to be in the crafts arena as well, and so added the ability to charge for postage. I was selling earrings on Fiverr in May 2010 as a promotion. I wouldn't have been able to do that if I had to eat the postage.

I have bought a number of physical things on Fiverr that required shipping, such as pinback buttons. The buttons that calocedrus makes are a good deal.

OP, I'm sorry you had this experience. Fiverr should have Amazoned-up and reimbursed the unhappy buyer out of their funds, not yours. Their new instant refund (for any reason) policy is screwing sellers over.
