Started my new fitness site: Feedback?

Hey Warriors,

I recently started my own fitness site with two other friends, both of whom recently graduated from college with degrees in kinesiology. In the past, I've created a NFL football blog, a men's humor site and a few others. This is my first site that I'm attempting to actually help others with rather than just to provide entertainment.

The site is called "Work, Health and Fitness" and it covers topics about fitness and health for people who work 40+ hour work weeks. The site is not yet complete and I haven't officially announced the launch to anyone, but I figured I'd open it up to you Warriors for feedback.

If any of you are interested, I have just begun to train for a half-marathon that takes place in 12 weeks and will be documenting the whole training process via the blog. Here is the article for that.

Let me know your thoughts on the site and what you think.
-Rob

Looks good but I would definitely throw a custom header on there.

Yeah needs to be custom man. Too generic.

Definitely agree with you both.. I need to get some custom graphics/header before the official launch to improve branding. I'm just trying to get a head start on the content now and have a good base before I officially introduce the site to the world

Yeah. It seems like you will have the content game down. Just focus on design and branding. I've been in the niche for quite some time and it is obvious when people bullshit the content.

    Hi,

Your website is decent. but it is still not optimized.

To me, the first question is to ask yourself whether you will visit or re-visit this website.

Nice site so far, but you said that this is a site for those who work 40+ hours a week.

I guess I was kind of expecting something like, mini-workouts to do in your cubicle, or stretches to do between meetings, or proper form when sitting and typing at your desk, or even articles like, How does working out affect your attention and motivation at work, or things like should you workout before work, at lunch time or after work what is better?

But maybe it's just because of the content that you have on there but if I visited your site I would think it is a site about training for marathons.

    Nothing against that at all.

I guess my point is to figure out who you are targeting, and to provide content that would be relevant to their aims and goals, their questions, and concerns, etc.

I do like the slogan, "Busting out of the cubicle... and into good health"

I do like the color scheme so far, maybe add something like a streak of orange, or yellow, but then that makes me think of a store like sports chek.

I do think that you should move the "workout tips" tab, from way over on the right, move it more towards the left. Even if it was the first tab on the left would be great. The reason is I feel that would be the tab I would be using the most when I visit your site.

I really like how you have the amazon ads and how you put the "books were reading" right above it. That makes it seem less salesy.

I also like the idea of having a reviews section. Again you have a nice way to introduce recommended supplements without coming across as salesy.

So far so good in my opinion at least.

Looks like you need a better theme.

Also, your content seems too eager to SELL. Example Rob's Half-Marathon: Beginning the Journey You have to establish credibility first. Walk your reader through your 'development'-branding that person each step of the way.

Also, I'd focus on getting a list going

I'll definitely take all of your advice into account. Like I mentioned, it's still a work in progress, but your feedback will help me take the site to where it needs to go. Here are a few things I'll be doing after work today.

    1. Searching the web for a designer to begin working on a nice custom logo that will help to establish a brand.
    2. Start designing my email opt-in forms using AWeber and Opt-In Skin.
    3. Continuing to create more quality content.
    4. Tinkering with the layout to see what works and adding more personalization to the site so that the end-user will know this isn't just some crappy fitness site, there is a real face and person behind it.

Keep the feedback up if anyone else has additional comments, I appreciate it all.

your content to ad ratio is way too high and your image folder is also far too big and will need to be reduced. These are Known Panda penalties hope this helps

I'm curious how my ad ratio is too high? Can you elaborate on this for me. Thank you

        Some good advice so far.

I might suggest a couple things re: your opt-in box if you want to lift subscriber conversions. (Hint: You DO want to do this)

        1. Move it up "above the fold." Put it up towards the top of the page, or maybe in a slider/floatin that grabs the visitors attention.

        2. To increase the perceived value of opting in, instead of just "tips and nutrition advice," offer a free report or an ebook of some sort along the lines of "Free Report: These three weird tips will get you Marathon bound in 30 days or less." Or something similar, you get the idea...

I think the layout and/or theme need to be changed. It looks like you have good content but theme kind of tramples on it.

    1. The Feature Box dominates the page and you need to scroll down to see any content. Feature boxes look cool, but often they take up way too much real estate and push more imprtant things below the fold.

    2. Your Opt-In box is below the fold. It needs to be above the fold. You can also add another small one at the bottom/footer.

    3. Your article summaries are repeating the same articles more than once. "Latest Workout Tips" and "Best of the Best" both show the same image and article "Sign up for half marathon...". The article "Interview with ultra marathoner..." also shows twice with the same image.

I really think the featured slider box is too big. I don't like them at all so I usually disable them on themes I use, but they seem to be popular.

I also agree about the focus of the site. It seems to be about running fitenss with a series about running marathons and the interview with an ultra marathoner. But it also features reviews for weight training supplements to help build lean muscle mass.

It looks good so far but I would:

    1. Tighten up the presentation. You aren't flagging down passers by hoping they click on an ad (adsense), you actually have something to say. Your About page really personalizes the blog but this personalization is missing when you arrive on the home page

Get your content up front and centre and don't hide it behind that glossy Feature spinner.

    2. Focus your target audience. Get more focused on who you are targeting for your site:
    - Is it the weekend warrior looking for tips to help his part-time efforts?
    - Is it the former jock who wants to keep up with his college sports playing days now that he is in a corporate job?
    - Is it the out-of-shape person looking to get back into shape?
    - Is it the amateur fitness buff who wants to go from weekend warrior to elite athlete?

When I read the "About" page and the review of the work-out supplement, I get the impression that your audience may be "gym rats" turned off by articles about marathoners.

Anyway, it looks like good start but get ultra focused on your audience and your message and you should really be able to grow your business.

Hopped on Fiverr and got myself and quick header created, which should be good for now while I continue to build up the brand. It's live on the site as we speak.

Ah, I saw the first posts about the header, but I thought, 'Hell, this a great header!' when I took a look.

You moved fast on that! I never saw the original.

Personally, I don't like the small print of the posts, but I'm 45 years old (and yeah, I know I can zoom, but I like seeing everything as-is instead of having to do that. Maybe I'm just weird). I liked small print when I was young. Not now. Text is too light also.

Need to add a variety of formatting to those posts as well, imo, but you're just getting rolling with this, so no doubt you'll figure it out how best to present everything.

        I don't like the theme.

It's a bit too early to tell. I wouldn't know what the site was about if I landed on it, but that could all change with a few new articles.

Nice domain, very nice logo. Needs a new theme.

To me, being in the same niche, your site is kind of scattered. What exactly are you giving your viewers? Are you selling supplements or giving content or both?

You have a great start here though Rob. Keep it going for sure!

I have one comment for you, when I click and read your workout tips. I do not like the blue newsletter box almost at the bottom of the page. I do like parts of it but you need much more content. I feel when i view a site like this, you have to be the expert and keep me motivated and engaged.
Check out : SparkPeople.com or BeachBody or biggest loser

These are just some ideas. I hope some of it helps!
