Help with Valuing a Domain

Hi guys,

I'm trying to clean up my server and streamline my business, removing any projects that don't directly send any rank, traffic or sales to my main site.

Most my projects are apps and websites with large userbases attached to them, so passing them on to friends with similar sites or services, selling them or simply leaving them to run themselves with user-gen content is rather easy.

However, I have no experience selling a domain only, and would like to ask your advice.

The domain I am looking to sell is RetinaWallpapers [dot] net, something I purchased after the iPad was rumoured to have a Retina screen and anticipating that it wouldn't be long until they came to Laptops and Desktops.

As you can see by Google Trends, for 'retina wallpapers' there is an explosion with searches for that term (sorry, can't post links yet)

and according to Google's keyword tool, there are currently 27,000 monthly searches.

I know if I spent a month setting up a wallpaper site with this domain, I could easily net a $500 per month profit if it was a simply html site and served the downloads from my standalone media server.

Now to the question,

In such a new, small but HUGE growth potential market and having such an exact match domain (the .com is running some shitty Tumblr account for iPhone only walls)

How much could I sell this domain for?

Could I get $1,500 - $2,000 for it? Or am I living in dream world? If I am, then it's obviously more worth it to set up a site, but I really haven't got the time right now, so I am in a pickle

Sad to say there is no domain appraisal in this forum. You may visit other domain appraisal communities.. And another thing, a domain has no value to general public unless someone is interested...

    Ok cool,

I'm not trying to sell it to anyone here, simply ask if anyone could give advice on if it actually has any value

    But thanks for your reply!

Actually, there are 2,900 exact match searches, but that is still excellent. (You can't go by "broad match", as the results include any occurrence of the individual words).

RetinaWallpapers.net is an excellent domain name, and yes, you could very well get $1,500 - $2,000 for it.

The amount you're able to get for it is exactly related to your ability to research and locate potential buyers. It also depends on your patience. Are you willing to hold onto it for months or years until the right buyer is found? If not, you may be able to flip it quickly for a Benjamin or two.

Have you come across this appraisal site? This may not be the total solution to your question but I hope this helps.

The OP is asking for domain valuation and not website. This link is irrelevant..

        Quick and Easy,

Your domain name is currently worth . . . $0.

It doesn't become valuable until you make it valuable to someone who wants it.

If you had traffic coming to the domain it increases in potential value.

If you had revenue generated by the domain it increases the potential value.

If you had a web site on the domain it increases the potential value.

If you had PR to the site on your domain it increases the potential value.

If you had backlinks to the domain it increases the potential value.

However, none of these things pay off in real dollars until you find a willing and capable buyer that agrees to the sale.

If you could easily net $6,000/year with the domain and hardly any work as you say, I would suggest you do that. Then after a couple of years when you have a history of revenue generation, you should be able to turn potential in reality.

That's simply not true. Good domains sell without a site, traffic, backlinks, etc. He only needs to find the buyer for it, and there is a buyer for it.

There are people that would be interested in that domain. Gene has already given you some pointers. If you would like some more advice and tips, I think you should go to where domainers hang out. Visit namepros.com

How sure of this are you? Because instead of making $500 off the domain like you say you could do "easily", you're posting here asking if you could get $1500+ for it.

Build it out, monetize it, and prove your assumption. Not only will it generate income for you in the short-term, if it does as well as you're assuming, it'd warrant a significantly higher pricepoint than the $1500-2000 range depending on how you're monetizing.
