Do you have a script like this? Would you want it if I built it?

I'm talking with my programmer about developing a small desktop app that could check the page positions of all my websites automatically every 12 hrs.

The app will output a file of current page positions, mark any changes, and send an email or similar notification if a url drops below position 5 on page 1 of Google.

We're looking into the possibility of checking yahoo positions also.

Do you know if something that does this (or similar) already exists?

If not, would you consider paying a small one-time fee for an app that did this for you?

Thanks
Nathan

    Hi Nathan

I'm not sure if such a service exists already.

If not, you could probably charge a monthly fee for something like this.

That way, your revenue would grow month by month.

    Just a thought.

    Cheers,

    Hi Neil,

I'm always going back and forth with the monthly thing. I totally agree with you from the biz owner perspective. The other side of me remembers how much I appreciate buying and using w/o the monthly fees! :-)

    Thanks much for the feedback

I'd be interested in this. However.

I dont care too much about yahoo so that feature doesn't
    interest me that much.

I'm not that interested in being emailed everytime it goes
    beyond position 5 either.

Also I would want it to be able to track unlimited keywords
    for me.

Personally I would just like an application where I imput my
url and keyword I am trying to rank for and be able to go
to one place to see where I am ranking for all of my keywords
instead of having to manually search each keyword
    in Google.

If you can do that then you would have a buyer out of me.

Will, everything you've mentioned is exactly what I'm looking at accomplishing. All features would be optional (on/off), including whether you want Yahoo and notifications.

The idea is to upload a list of keywords then associate those with a domain. Each set of keywords/domain would be independent profiles. You'd be able to run position ranking searches for profiles independently, as groups, or all of them.

The app would be something that'd run in the background all the time (my preference is every 12 hrs), or by request.

Since you can do this for free anyway, I'm not sure enough people would see value in a tool that only did this to pay any sort of recurring fee, I know I wouldn't.

Good luck with it though - I'm guessing you must've been asked for it or seen people asking in order to be thinking of creating it in the first place.
THANKS, I hadn't heard about Web position pro ( Web Position Gold Pro 4 | WebPosition Gold 4.0b.785 Seo Software | Search Engine Marketing Promotion Ranking Benefits of WebPosition Standard Edition Platinum ). I'm going to try that out and see if it accomplishes exactly what I'm hoping for.

Regarding free - that's true, but who wants to check that stuff manually? When you own hundreds (or even 10) domains it gets to be a severe time waster going and checking these things. Again, hat-tip for the app mentioned, I'll be looking into it.

Thanks again for the responses, more opinions are greatly appreciated.

    Hi Nathan,

You could have the best of both worlds.

Offer a downloadable version with limited functionality and a monthly paid version with enhanced features.

    Job done!

There are already tools around that will do this for you.

I have several of them myself.

Just a heads-up for those reading the thread. I've downloaded and installed WebPosition Pro. Their free trial doesn't let you run decent tests because they limit what search engines you can test their software on - ie, no google, no yahoo. Lame.

Also found this - not sure what kind of authority it has though: WebPosition Gold Review: Comparison & Reviews with TOP 3 SEO Software: All-in-One Submission,SEO Suite & Web Position Gold,IBP - Apex Promotion Website

That all said, I'm going with to try out IBP again. The last time I used IBP I don't remember seeing this position checking feature, but will test it out: Search Engine Ranking Checker

I used something similar to this - a free monitor for Google found at Free Monitor for Google - query Google easily. Google Monitor Query website position web ranking software

It works well but WATCH OUT! I went a little crazy with it last year on one of my sites, tried to see how deep I could get it to go so I asked it to search Google's first 100 pages for a keyword to see how my site ranked. Google spotted this as an automated search and penalized me for it big time - they dropped my site from 12th to 200th (bye bye AdSense revenue) position and for a day all of the computers on my network had to enter a captia when doing a Google search (to prove that I wasn't a robot). Won't do that again!

    Good luck with your project

I don't know how that's possible... I don't know this software, but how would Google know what DOMAIN you're targeting if all you're doing is searching on KEYWORD PHRASES? See what I mean?

Finding the position of a domain by a certain keyword phrase is a passive thing... no way for Google to know you were looking for a certain domain.

Unless, you were running the app from your own web server... then you'd be giving your identity away I suppose.

That's why this kind of thing needs to be run from a client, not a server app.

I built a Java application 2 years ago that does this for me. I can feed it a list of keyword phrases and it checks Google positions against a list of domains and returns a CSV file.

At one point I had it checking thousands of keyword phrases nightly.

It would be a simple matter to build another web app that does the analysis (check for movement on a daily basis).

Nathan, I might consider it just for Google - It could be an interesting tool to use to give weekly / monthly reports to my offline clients so if it is automated to even 'print screen' and send email to more than one person - I could see that of being valuable to my consulting biz.

    cheers, m
