All submitted content will be at www.reddit.com/r/XXXXX under the "new" tab. There is a limited time period of a few days where it stays there and can pull in traffic, and hopefully get upvoted to the subreddit first page. There are two things that make or break a post on Reddit. The first is the mods or moderators, they have the first choice of whether a post will be allowed or removed. Each subreddit (sub category) has it's own set of mods. Second are the subscribers to the sub-reddits, they have the ability to vote up or down any submission.

When submitting a post to Reddit the first most important thing is that you select the correct sub-reddit, if you don't it will immediately be down-voted because it's not related to the interest of the community.

Choose a title that will get attention but doesn't sound like blog-spam. Redditors hate blog-spam. When submitting a post to Reddit your user name should not be related in any way to the content your submitting, Redditors do not like self-submissions. If your domain is Success Stories then your reddit user name should not be Success Stories. Be a value to the community and add useful content/comments and you'll gain respect from the sub-communities. If a person submit links from only one or two websites they will be seen as a spammer, and as I mentioned Reddit hates spam and spammers.

As far as the question, regarding The New York Times and WSJ, well these days Reddit has been compromised and yes there are paid posters and commenters very similar to the old Digg Bury brigades. This is true particularly to political opinions and spreading propaganda. As far as posts continuing to show up, this is again due to propaganda and the simple fact that a post can now be submitted multiple time. In the past when a link was submitted that already existed, a duplicate, it wouldn't be allowed again, you would simply be referred to the existing post.

If you stick to the smaller sub-reddits you will not have to worry too much about getting buried by down-votes.

EDIT: It's also important to know that as your link gains popularity in the sub-reddit it will start to appear to others in the main-Reddit-loop(for lack of a better choice of words) which is basically a collection of popular posts from all categories,that's what you see on the homepage and subsequent pages.
