Newb Niche Site Marketing

First time posting and I've read countless threads about all the newb questions being answered so I apologize. I suppose I just need a good kick in the butt and a little reassurance its a good idea.

I've been in the graphic design / web design field for quite awhile and currently have a full time job making a decent wage but Ive always read and wanted to get more involved into Internet Marketing as I, like the rest of most people would love a little added security as well the dream of working from home would be amazing. I have spent a lot of time in the War Room trying to find what is right for me and read a lot of Spencer Haws blog Niche Pursuits.

I've decided to go the route of small niche websites with adsense to start out with as a route on my first venture in the IM world simply because I maintain a hockey team website and have seen my adsense recurring close to a couple dollars a day (not the greatest reason I know). It seems like a wealth of information to take in but having the ability to turn out wordpress sites easily (having that experience) seems like a plus, not to mention I am willing to write some articles as I have had a personal blog for years.

From my understanding you need a lot of these small sites to succeed but starting out do you recommend doing just one to get the feel for it or should it be more like 1 - 5? Also what if any changes to Googles algorithm have had effects on the success of this type of marketing? Content is king obviously, I figured starting with 5 sites or so and writing(or hiring a writer) a good deal of articles is what I need to do with the right keyword research.

I think more then anything Im just looking for a little guidance or suggestions on how you started(if this is your IM field). As a beginner is this a wise decision to start with the changes made to Google?
