I'm new to the forum but I'm a little bit familiar with internet marketing. I just don't know some of the terms you guys use here.

Anyway, I have a plan of starting up a ecommerce business selling supplements and vitamins since I'm passionate about fitness and all. I've even thought about using the dropshipping style of selling these products to customers.

The problem is there is so much information out there on ecommerce and dropshipping I don't really know where to start.

I've thought about using volusion.com to start up a website and use a site like doba.com for shipping. What's everyone's take on this idea?

All it is right now is just a vision. It's just a matter of making that vision come to life.

Yeah "information overload" is easy to happen when you have thousands of articles available on any given topic.

My recomendation is to find a plan that you like and then just stick to it.. Don't let yourself get "shiny object syndrome" where you keep moving on to something new... You can do that later... Just pick a plan, write down each step you need to take, then knock those steps out one by one until you are finished.

Doba.com or Alibaba.com are fine for dropshipping. You may want to consider listing your products on Amazon (biggest buyer search engine in the world) and use their Fulfillment service to handle processing and delivery to your customers.

I set up this exact same thing almost a year ago to the date. It's a decent idea (I got it after reading the 4 Hour Work Week, not sure about you...), but here are some thoughts:

Pro: It's a nice one/two punch, and relatively cost effective ($100/month roughly).
Con: You still need to figure out how to get traffic...

In general, your biggest challenge will be driving traffic to the site. Personally, I did adwords, but that gets expensive. You definitely want to look into your cost-per-click for running ads, especially since Vitamins/Supplements keywords are highly competitive...

Also, even if you do drive paid traffic to your site, you have to remember that this doesn't guarantee that they're going to buy. Because Vits/Supps is such a competitive market, in fact, you'll probably have a hard time making sales.

One solution, which I'd consider, is to find a highly specialized niche...Find a vitamin or supplement that has a lot of great benefits, and that isn't overly "trendy" yet. Then, you can advertise using the benefits for that supplement (ie,"make me more flexible," etc), rather than for "vitamins" and "supplements" which are expensive keywords...

By doing this, you can also set up a simple sales page, which a programmer can help you with, and which will cost a little more up front (a few hundred dollars), but save you hundreds of dollars each year as compared to Doba/Volusion. You can even use Google Checkouts, or something similar, to avoid the painful credit card processing set-up/fees that Volusion throws your way.

Just some thoughts, but I hope they help you along your way. If you have more questions, feel free to PM me....

  • I sell supplements through Amazon as an affiliate. Got my first payday out of them in the mail today. Hurrah! Seriously awesome market. So many different options the best I can suggest is to look around, do your research and make your decision then.

I think you must plan everything before you start.

Internet is very broad. Go for more course that can help you with your online business and you can start your online journey.

Discover how others market their products online and create a good marketing
campaign that will help you make sales.

Life without goals is just like setting for nothing.

Hey there, welcome to the forum!

    1. First off your overall vision seems to be very broad. I would begin by drilling down exactly what kind of niche you want to work in. You said e-commerce, so figure out what market you want to work in etc.

    2. Secondly, write your ideas on paper. Write down everything you want to achieve, what you want to sell, what products, what kind of sites do you want, etc. Write ALL your goals and plans down so you can get it all out of your system. Then go back, and look at trying to put things in an order. I.e. first thing you need to do is research, and understanding your market, is it a niche that makes money, are there hungry buyers, etc.

    3. The next part; find a product/program to follow. I personally use a coaching program online that I follow every day. This is the BEST way to keep yourself on track, and not get distracted by all those new products about making money online, coming out every single day! This is really helped me to keep focus; and I track my progress on my Blog.

    4. FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS. I’m going to write this again; when you find a product, you must not get side-tracked. This sounds really obvious, but believe me it’s so easy to get distracted by the other products, because subconsciously we are always looking for ways to do things easier/faster/better; but you need to understand that the shortcuts in this business seldom ever last; and you must learn the core basics of making money online before trying to take shortcuts.

    5. Don’t give up, Don’t look for quick riches, Don’t aim to get rich quickly, but aim to get rich forever.

Lots of other tips I can give you, but think this is a good start to get you going. Right now just do research, find out what niches are out there for you that interest you; find out the different methods of making money and what ones entice you. If your still confused you could always give me a shout.

Worldwide Brands have a good reputation for dropshipping. They also have a tool where you can test the viability of a product.

I already figured out the niche I want to work in and its in the natural supplements niche for people who are conscious about certain ingredients. Basically, the kind of supplements without the harmful ingredients in them like acesulfame potassium found in most protein powders.

I business I want to start is something like GNC, so that will be my niche.

I would just reiterate that to start:

I would focus on just one or two supplements...Then create a really strong sales letter/website for them, espousing their benefits. And I would back this up with keyword research, to make sure you can run paid advertising for these two supplements without much cost (but with high demand)...

If you try to be too big, to fast, like GNC, you'll end up spending a lot of money on the site setup/design (even if you use Volusion/Doba), and a lot of money on expensive keywords.

I don't know if I can build a sales letter/website because these aren't my own products I made myself. I guess affiliate marketing would work best for this kind of situation?

I just started reading "4 hour work week" as one of the other posters read. So I guess that's a start.

  • The 4 hour work week is cool. I love the idea of living life that way. It does take some balls to follow your dreams, especially when it means giving up all the the crap in your life you don't need.
