Backdrop color for shooting videos?

I'm going to be buying some full length curtains to use as a backdrop while shooting IM videos. Will be just me and a whiteboard in front of the curtains.

Any suggestions on what color curtains to use for best viewer trust, contrast, look etc?

So far I'm thinking a blueish grey.

As long as you're wearing appropriately-colored clothing, it shouldn't matter.
You may want to look at your wardrobe for clues, so that you don't need to unnecessarily buy new clothes for filming.

  • White. White is the best. Shine some lights on the background and on yourself and it will be crisp and look like something straight off of apples website.

Instead of curtains, I'd set up a "green screen" as a background so you have the ability to add practically "anything" as a background.

Any chance you have a link where to buy a green screen that is reasonably priced? Would not mind shooting video on one. I like the idea. Thanks!

Sorry Rob, I don't have a direct link other than to say I thought I saw good deals for them on Amazon. Ebay is probably also an option. And you can also probably make one pretty easily, lighting is probably the biggest concern.

I can tell you that the cheapest version of Sony Vegas (about $45) does a great job with green screen (chroma key function) and if you get the green screen correct, it's just a couple of clicks in Sony Vegas to add whatever background you want.

Paint the wall in your house where you'll be shooting the videos. Cheap and can be easily changed to suit.

A professional video compositor can answer it but video makers use green screen for easy extraction of videos from back ground.

I forgot the exact term of that extraction procedure :|
    Thank you

Gideon Shalwick has a great video on YouTube about using white as a background...
    Hope it helps!

If you cannot create a background that tells the audience about you..

    GO BLACK

This forces the audience to look at you and only you.. the way you stand out from a black (yet well lit) background creates an almost "aura" effect when people are sitting on a webinar for 1-2 hours..
