Where do people on Craigslist find all these special characters?

I never use symbols or characters in my headlines but I'm interested in doing a few split tests.

Some people are able to find the weirdest characters and I have no idea how they're doing it. The only method I know is to open up msword then copy & paste a character you want.

The problem is, there are tons of characters I'm seeing on craigslist that I can't find in msword. Which leads me to believe they are coming from somewhere else. I have searched online and have not been able to find any that are different from msword. So where are people finding all these weird characters on craigslist? Do they just steal them from other listings I guess? There are many I'm seeing that are NOT in msword.

I'm looking for 2 characters specifically. One that looks like a home, and another that looks like a hammer. I was able to find something that looks like a home in msword, but nothing that looks like a hammer.

Is there a way you can actually make characters? (I doubt it but had to ask)

Just curious what people know about this.

Thanks - Red

I suspect it has something to do with how you encode your page. Remember, many pages are encoded in ANSI. Some are in UTF

Google the word "ASCII ART" and you get lots of different types

but note that not all characters look correct - its a font-dependent display.

    Banned
They were really hot in the WSO and advertising forums here but they are banned now. Can't use them on the WF. It was pretty ugly with everyone trying to outdo everyone else.

I have noticed on craigslist for the past week that my symbols have not been showing. I have been using symbols in the titles for almost a year now and it seems the party is over.

I am in Charlotte NC and no one has symbols on their posts anymore. It seems it just got banned last week.

You can head to Ascii Table - ASCII character codes and html, octal, hex and decimal chart conversion or look up ascii table in google.

As mentioned previously, you hold down the alt key and enter the three digit number on your number pad.

Note: Back in the day, I would create folders under the alt+255 code. This will hide the directory. If you don't know the ascii code to pull it up...you wouldn't be able to.
Probably doesn't work anymore in Windows 7. Haven't tried it in years. We gave our computer science teacher hell back in 97-98. lol
