Making money from website traffic?

We have a free classifieds site and we don't charge anything for using the site. It's completely free.

We'll be doing some aggressive advertising so we'll be getting a bit more traffic during the next few months.

My question is ... how can I make money from all that traffic while the site remains entirely free? I'm not talking about banners since we already sell banners in the site.

Realistically speaking, how much money can one make per month this way?

    If it's a good site, a LOT!

    Sell "premium ads" or "highlighted ads" that run for 7 or 30 days perhaps. That's how many classified ad sites make most their money.

    I would recommend just testing out different offers. Try offering premium listings with top page postings, ability to attach more pictures etc. Offer the user a way to distinguish their posting from the free ones.People will pay for exclusivity.

    The problem is that we're new, so for now, I don't think people will pay for those upgrades. They'll pay once the site gains some popularity.

    In the meantime, I was hoping of making some money just from the amount of traffic that we'll be getting from the advertising we'll be doing.

    As others have said I would test out some different options and see what works best. Initially I think a combo of paid upgrades and some content ads would be what I'd try. We have a shopping portal that does quite well with that basic approach!

    Users don't need to enter their email address unless they post an ad, so for now, I wouldn't have subscribers.

    Theoretically speaking, how much could one make with adsense?

    Back in the day it was relatively simple to generate enough traffic from that type of website to surpass $100 a day in adsense, but not anymore. I think a good initial goal would be to get to $100/day between adsense and some sort of paid promo option for subscribers and work to grow from there!
