Video Editing Software

I had someone ask me about what Video Editing Software is best to use. I really didn't know but I do know that Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9 is supposed to be pretty good.

However, I came across CyberLink PowerDirector 7 Deluxe, and it seems to be real good. Does anyone know which one of these two software packs is better for editing your movies?

Thanks!

how deep do you want to go down the movie editing rabbit hole?

if you need something light done, for youtube or the like, use imovie (mac) or windows built-in Movie Creator.

Anything heavier, and I'm a big fan of Final Cut on Mac. Or, Adobe Premier. For effects, use after-effects, and for titling, use Livetype (part of the Final Cut Studio Package)

Can you tell I'm a Mac Junkie?

Sony's Package is good for intermediate work, just whatever you do on any of the programs, more RAM and more Hard-drive is critical.

I have a 16 gig RAM, quad core g5 with 2 TB HD, and I can push it to the limits with HDV video. If you use video to make money, make sure you spend quality time learning the software and money on your rig, otherwise just hire a starving film student. Both work just fine

I thought you were joking so I searched for "mac video encoding cluster" as I really love this sort of technology. Your site came up!

I apologise for doubting you - your setup is clearly awesome!

Internet marketing is my main business. Video encoding/editing is my wife's company but I built/run/automate the cluster encoding.

Compressor is an awesome app for clustering. I have built a 100% command line script system to submitting/naming videos to the cluster.

I really enjoyed the process even though I wanted to pull out my hair a few times along the way

I use Premiere for video editing. After effects is good for some video effects stuff. This is on PC. Premiere is basically the PC version of Final Cut. For basic editing, windows movie maker is fine.

I'd probably choose vegas out of the choices. I believe it has auto-edit to music. I used to know a guy who was a big fan of it

I recently purchased this , Video editing software and hardware, PC TV Tuner and video transfer industry leader Pinnacle Systems. , as I am starting to edit HD in both DV and digital which many softwares will not handle. Thus far, I find it easy and I like it.....I have a copy of Vegas Pro and it is too hard for me as a non-tech kind of guy.

I just bought an i-mac which I know NOTHING about and think it is the only way to go when editing video.

Hey there - start with a free video editing software - if you are a pc user then use Windows Movie Maker - I started with that myself

you can edit, cut/split, add voiceover (narration function), add music, add transitions etc.

You can produce video for the web with ease.

Once u are comfortable with that - u move up to a paid one - I use uLead..some use Sony Vegas, some use Mac etc.

I must say, I'm humbled by the mac layout....

It looks like you have a bundle of mac pro's in the front and g5's in the back?

      droooolllll

My wife is the graphics guru. I'm just a kid that's too visually-entranced by mac to ever want to use a pc again (for personal or creative use.) Creation, audio, video, web design, and fun stuff are all mac. but i still have to lug a pc for several windows only scripts, and for all my "day job" stuff. I can't stand having to use boot camp to run both win and mac, so I settle for being the nerd at the coffee shop with both set up in front of him.

For the guy that bought the i-mac. If apple is still selling final cut express, that's a great way to step up from imovie without the financial expense of final cut studio. It's still pretty awesome, and will do most of everything a pro-am will ever need.

If You are going to edit HD videos then choose a software which can use your GPU-s resources for rendering. It will certainly make your job a lot faster.
As far as I know Cyberlink Powerdirector can do that, and Adobe CS4 also supports GPU acceleration with the use of RapidHD Plugin.

For basic work simple programs will be ok. But for professional work I highly recommend Adobe CS4 (Premiere, After Effects) or Final Cut Pro.

I would go for PowerDirector Ultra. No steep learning curve. Good instruction videos on YouTube by experienced users.

Many options, even chroma keying. Produces nice small mp4's that look great on mobile phones.

As a recent convert to Mac (after 1 too many PC crashes that forced me to throw my desktop out of a 3rd story window) I have to bow in respect to the Mac Cluster!

I have used many Video editing tools on both Mac and PC and Final Cut Pro and Premier are definitely very similar in features.

Sony Vegas is very poweful but a tad expensive. For new Video Marketers I recommend "Windows Movie Maker" on the PC and "iMovie" on the Mac to keep budgets low.

Also, one often overlooked option that is both Mac and PC compatible is the online editor JayCut.com which does offer some tremendous capabilities and has a very simple interface. They are currently beta-testing a new, even more powerful editor that I have had the pleasure of working with and it is very powerful indeed.

    Hope that helps some.

I like Sony Vegas, but it is so expensive. Also, it does not recognize some of the new HD movie formats so I use a converter called AVS video converter. The video quality with microsoft movie maker is super low, get an new open source video editor if you do not have money.

Adobe Premiere was what I used in the bad old days, but now it is not that great anymore. It seems Adobe keeps making its products big and bloated. The old Dreamweaver was fine, but now I rarely use the new one.
