Starting A Membership Site...

Hey Warriors, I hope you're well.

I've been wanting to start my own membership site for some time now but not really had the time to do it. I realise this will take-up a lot of my time initially.

The point of this post is to reach out to anyone that has actually done it.

So for you membership owners out there, do you have any tips regarding:
  • Platform
  • Payment
  • Content Delivery
  • Affiliate programme
  • Promotion etc...
Thanks.

Please only post a reply if you have actually done it!

    Do some reverse engineering.

Look at the sites you have joined and ask the owners what script they have used.

Write down a list of the things you want to be integrated, and then go out and buy the one that fits your needs. Speak with the script owner to find out who the most capable people are, a recommendation here may be more expensive than a normal freelancer, but that means you will get the job done and the site will work.

Personally I've been using fastmember as the plugin with thesis as the theme, using JVZoo to take payments and aweber to contact my buyers list.

Good luck, hope it goes well for you.

Hey, I have had considerable experience in this area and purchased several membership scripts before I finally got a setup that I was happy with.

I think Optimizepress is definitely the way to go regarding a theme
I use Tips and Tricks HQ's emember plugin, their eshop plugin and their affiliate plugin

This setup has been perfect for me and I have been running a successful membership site for over a year now.

This option will cost you about $200 to set up, so it's a pretty cheap deal that delivers the goods. You could try S2 member (which is free) to secure the site, that's another alternative.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

I have a membership-based business. I'm happy to share my resources. Take what you will, but my business is very different than what you probably have in mind.

My business is a trade association (institute, actually). Our dues are annual (NOT monthly) and though our members get many goodies in their membership benefits package, content is NOT a main reason for joining. (They join for credibility in their industry as well as connection to their peers and industry resources.)

Our membership benefits package is a mix of physical and digital benefits. I have a Wordpress site and we simply post the downloadable benefits on a password-protected page. Since our membership is annual, the benefits and password don't change much.

If you're thinking of the more common membership site with monthly content, try the Wishlist plugin. It was recommended to me here and I liked it. I'm just doing something different, so I don't use it. It's a good platform and content delivery manager.

As for payments and affiliate programs, I use 1 Shopping Cart (which has an affiliate program built into it) and a merchant account. 1SC has a LOT of functionality and I love it!

As for promotion, you just apply the basics of Internet marketing to membership-based businesses just like any other biz. The details will depend on your niche and target audience.

    Hope that helps!

Get s2members it's great. The free version only lets you receive paypal payments. If you also want to receive credit cards or whatever you must purchase the pro version.

Not sure what you mean with content delivery. Anyway, you can restrict pages that only paying costumers can see depending on their level. You can free, bronze, gold whatever... then you can set a monthly or a one time fee depending on their access level.

I set my membership sites up with S2member. It took me a while to learn some of its and outs and I am not an expert at writing conditional wordpress statements, but I have set mine up so that I can use the built in examples and that has worked really well for me.

Creating a membership site is not an easy job, no matter what others tell you. Here are the resources i used to build the site:
    • Platform - Amember
    • Payment - Paypal
    • Content Delivery - Joomla, WP, vBulletin
    • Affiliate programme - Amember
Promoting the site will be a bit hard especially with SEO since most of your site's content will be private. So you need to other ways to promote it. Paid traffic is the way to go if you ask me. PPC works great for me.

In terms of creating membership site and delivering content -
I would say OptimizePress does a great job.

Also I hope this GAMEPLAN helps:
    1. PLAN (know your financial goals & set a timeframe)
    2. PREPARE (gather your materials -product, niche, theme, bonuses)
    3. PROCESS (put your membership site altogether)
    4. PROMOTE (create launch sequence )

    Cheers!
