Press Release Websites

How effective are press release sites like PRlog for link building and general brand awareness. Has anyone tried using these before? Most are free but are the results worth the time and the promised distribution range of these sites?

PR websites aren't only meant for link building. Spreading the word and getting quality traffic is where they help the most. And of course you also get a high PR link in return, but that is usually not the primary reason to use them.

With press releases you get what you're paying for. You'd be a lot better of with a newsworthy, interesting and catchy press release on a premium website like prweb that charges $200 per release than 100s of free press releases.

Back in my IM consulting days, I used press releases successfully for lead generation actually. I was able to generate some pretty good leads by announcing the whitepapers I had created through the press releases I submitted.

Thanks everyone, some good feedback here. Follow up question, even if I get backlinks for it, what effects will it have on any rankings and SERPs?
