What's the best free Image Optimizer?

Google tells me I should optimize my images to improve site speed, but which optimizer should I use?

I see from Google searches that I need lossless type of optimizer rather than lossy type (which can lose quality with compression) but which losslessy optimizer is best?

Do they all do a good job or are some better than others?

And are png images faster than jpg?

I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm on Mac and Firefox.

Thanks in advance.

      Thanks for the replies.

That was the one I was considering...but is it the Best, or at least good? I'll probably use that and see how it goes, but if anyone has other suggestions, that would be great too.

The obvious answer would be to use smushit.com

However, for some strange reason, Yahoo is reporting a "page not found" for Yahoo!

As we already know that image optimization is now an essential and necessary part of SEO. Image is not read by google bot so we apply alt tag in image rather if doing image optimization take care of image optimization sites like Flickr, pichaus and ibibo etc. I don't think so that there is so such any idea except this rather image size matters a lot . Image size should be less so that it doesn't take more time to load a site. Load time effect a lot in image optimization technique.

Thanks for the replies people. I've been using Image Optimizer and it seems to work ok, is free and you can download the software so you can do batch optimizing on your own computer. I don't detect any visible loss of quality.

One other point that Google says is that you should not upload an image, find it's too big for the page and resize it using WordPress. If you do that, a reader's browser has to pick up the original and then resize it itself before showing it in the reader's screen. This takes extra time and can slow down site speed.

If an image is too big, delete it in Wordpress and resize it before uploading again into the post with the correct size (full size). I use Mac's Preview app to do that resizing.
