Clever Automated Blog Comment Spam

I got this spam comment on at least a dozen blogs today.

Hiya, i have seen your site when searching a few weeks ago and i really love the design! I just bought a new 3 character domain (cost me a packet) for a niche review blog, and i was wondering if your design is a free or paid one? I'm new to Wordpress and about to set it up, and i would really like to get something with a similar look to yours. Any ideas where i could download or buy something similar? Thanks for your help!
It seems like somebody bought themselves a new blog comment spammer program and put a little more thought into it than most folks do. If the same text hadn't been repeated so many times across so many blogs on unrelated posts I might have been fooled and approved it. As it is, "Hello Akismet."

Well I guess if you're going to be a comment spammer you might as well be clever about it ;-)

On the other hand, you sort of have to feel a bit sorry for someone that would spend a packet on such a lame domain name. No wonder they need a free WordPress theme.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Hehe... yup... I got the same thing on several blogs yesterday. It was worded a little differently though, so either they're spinning the text or they hired an "outsourcer" to leave blog comments for them.

Looks like they are using Xrumer or a similar program.

Forgive the stupid question but what happens if you do approve the comment? Is there a link or something hidden in them?

They just have their link in the 'website' field of the standard WordPress comment form. Their name is usually a keyword anchor like "Web Hosting" or "Forex Trading". Their goal is to land the comment on a blog where the blogger allows the comment and they've also used a plugin to allow links to be followed. If they do it enough times with an automated program they'll land a few.

I guess spammers figured out that they are being ignored so they are evolving in to something else. I guess we will have to look a little harder when it comes to spam from now on.

where that kind of comment fails is if your blog is using the default wordpress template...
