Are there any drawbacks to hosting with one company and registering domains at another?

I am switching to dreamhost but get better deals on domains at other websites. Is there any problem registering domains on one site and hosting on another?

I do it all the time with namecheap and hostgator. Just have to change the dns, which is usually pretty easy. Only drawback is it may take a bit for the site to propogate, but not a big deal.

That's actually the smart way to do it.

What happens if you have some kind of dispute with your provider if they hold both your hosting and domain registration? Say, maybe, a payment gets messed up. They lock your account and your domain to keep you from pointing it somewhere else. Or suppose the company goes under (it's happened), and suddenly you can't reach either your site files or your nameserver settings.

You are screwed, blewed and tattoed, my friend.

Always keep your hosting and domain registration separate. It's safer that way.

  Mostly irrelevant. Even if they are split up, let's suppose you did something you probably shouldn't have liked using trademarked names in your domain name. Your domain still can be locked by your domain provider. Then it doesn't matter you hosting is separate. All the traffic to that domain is gone.
  
  I'd argue that you ought not be doing things that risk getting your domain locked in the first place. If you are living on the edge, then don't require your business to function with a single domain. Better get 50 variations if there is a good chance of one of them being locked due to your risky business tactics.

  Pay your bills. On time. Every time. Or ahead of time.

  Choose more reliable companies. Understandably you can't predict the future, but you can narrow it down to the top providers.

  You should be making regularly scheduled offline backups of your site. You can buy cheap harddrive space at BestBuy and simply copy the files down periodically, or you can sign up for services that will do it for you.

No drawbacks at all. It's the only way I roll. I've had HostGator for years...never purchased a domain through them and never will.

I have Hostanother.com and do almost all of my domain purchases through NameCheap cause they are the easiest for transferring sites when you flip them

Plus Hostanother is as good as HG, IMO and is $25 a year for th same thing. Look in the forum for them. I really like the service and support

I only keep them separate. If you register your domain name with your hosting service it makes it a bit difficult if you ever want to leave your hosting provider for someone else.

Folks like namecheap and godaddy that make their business domain names have a lot of great tools dedicated to managing your domain names.

Just like folks like hostgator and bluehost that make their business webhosting have a lot of great tools dedicated to managing your hosting accounts

  The only time I have ever had them be the same is when I was using multiple hosting accounts and I had to buy one in order to get hosting. Otherwise, I have registrations in one place and domains in another.
  
  This has always worked out well for me especially when I am transferring domains. And I get great deals from both places.

Yup no drawbacks that im aware of, my hosting is very good and I always use namecheap for my domains they always have coupon discounts too which is cool.

Ya no downside I do it all the time as well Hostgator and Namecheap they say there is a delay to propogate but I have never had to wait more then an hour for any of my sites and I don't think I am unusually lucky lol.
