How many clicks without a sale before you drop a program?

I've been running a 125x125 banner on one of my sites and have accumulated over 200 clicks in the past couple weeks but absolutely no sales/commissions.

How long do you let a banner run before you dump it and replace it with something else?

I would have thought that I'd get at least a 0.5% conversion rate, but that hasn't happened.

Would appreciate any advice!

One of the problems with using a banner is that you don't have enough time to pre-qualify the clicks that come through.

Look at what the banner says, does it do anything to weed the "tire kickers" out?

While clicks are nice, they're no substitute for actual sales.

    All the best,

Does the banner go to a sales page?

What if you temporarily, or for half of the clicks, had it go to a signup for a free newsletter or ebook? This way you could find out if the problem is that people just aren't interested in taking action, even for free. If you can get free signups, then you'd know that the problem is in the offer or sales presentation, but at least people are interested.

It totally depends on the traffic? What does that ad spot usually convert at?

I've seen people with junk traffic go 1:8k, and be happy about that so you really need to have a value on the site's traffic. If you're purchasing traffic you should know after a thousand or so clickthroughs for sure.

It depends on where your traffic is coming from. Is your traffic targeted toward people that would want to click on your banner? If you're not targeting your traffic, then it's possible that you'll never get a click on your banner.

Are you sending that banner traffic straight to the offer page, or by way of your own landing page? Might be something you could test.

I would use the openx free open source ad server to rotate your banners. This way you can test a number of banners and just drop the ones that convert by tracking the clicks.

It's the big conversion myth again, that an site converts at about 1%..

As others have already explained it's entirely about the source, and the cost of the product at the other end.

Let me give you an example, I have an e-book / long copy product out there.

I buy traffic from Google using a CPM model on skyscrapers.

I can get 400 clicks before I get a sale from that traffic.

Now I also have affiliates using pre-sell methods and sending traffic who get 1 sale per 18 clicks...

So that shows you the differential in conversions on traffic.

      The second issue is price..

It won't suprise you to know if that if your trying to sell a $20k boat, your conversion ratio is going to be less than if you're trying to sell a $30 e-book.

In answer to how many clicks before a sale, it's like asking how long is a piece of string, you need more information and to be able to control the variables to get a sensible answer.

    Hey Comenius,

Ditto what everyone else has said...

But if you're promoting an average priced
IM/Online info product then I'd drop it after
    300 clicks with no sales.

Some people will only leave it 200, but I like
to give them a fair shot without breaking the
    bank.

    Hope that helps

It is important to diversify your traffic generating efforts, you should search out a system of traffic building so that if one is not effective the others may contribute support. There are many sites out there that pay others, either by money or credits, for just visiting your site. What you are interested in getting is targeted unique search engine visitors. These are persons that find your site by searching for your keywords. Noone can offer complete guarantees, but there are many that can offer trickling traffic. Think about it. Sometimes many trickles can add up to a hell of a lot of water... maybe even a flood.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I guess I'll let the program run to a thousand or two clicks before making a decision on junking it.

I rotate mine after 100 clicks and no sales.

Seems to work well for me. I get lucky and find one that gets some sales.

I do not like to leave a dead ad sitting in a space that I can find something else to put there.
