Changing The Domain On A Worpress Blog

Hi

I messed up and infringed copyright by using a brand name in my domain name and have had to shut the site down.

Please dont make the same mistake as the site was doing really well and now i have to start from scratch.

So.....

How easy is it and how would i go about changing the domain from say bluewidgets.com to greenwidgets.com

I have not got a clue how to go about it so any tips or links to any resources would be very useful.

    If I understand your questions correctly, you want to put the same content up on a different domain?

    If that is the case, you can either download your pages and post and re-create them on your new site, or use one of the backup solutions available and upload the contents to your new site.

    But you can't change your domain name, you will need a new one and go through the buying and DNS process again.

      I've moved a wordpress blog to a new domain many a time, luckily not because I had to shut it down due to a domain name dispute - tough break, manicmethods, sorry to hear that.

      This resource has been very helpful to me: (can't post links yet) so please try googling: Moving_WordPress and it will pop up on the codex wordpress org site.

    Yes i have got the new domain i want to use.

    Would it be best if i created a new host account on my reseller account and transfer the files and database over. If i do that are there any changes i would need to make in the database or in the wordpress wp-admin?

    Or is there a way i can just change some settings in the database or admin, point the domain and job done.

    I dont want to make an easy job complicated if i can just make a few changes and its done.

    ok,first create an addon domain with greenwidgets.com then a new folder called greenwidgets.com in public html/ will appear

    second , copy contents of bluewidgets.com folder to greenwidgets.com folder

    third, create a new database for greenwidgets.com write down database name, username and password

    fourthly, open config.php in greenwidgets.com and change urls which say bluewidgets to greenwidgets and change your database password, name and username

    fifth, download bluewdgets database sql file and upload to green widgets database(delete any tables in greenwidgets database first)

    and that may do it

    if you are with hostgator you can change default domain in your billing section

    also there is a plugin called "move wordpress"

    the problem you have is all indexed pages will return 404 pages so in theory it will be like starting from scratch but you will still have all your content, i would just redirect bluewidgets.com too greenwidgets.com for a while

    If it's on the same host, It's as simple as going to file manager, selecting all files and moving them to the new domain after you Add On the new domain to your cpanel. Then go into the database in the WP-Options table and change the url and in the Home table also.
