      Dylan,
Like your WOW images site - You should at least throw some adsense on it to make some money or an opt-in box............maybe you have something there and I missed it but sure hate to see you losing some easy coin.

          Hi Dylan,

I'd suggest finding a WOW player forum or two (I'll bet there are plenty out there) and hitting up some of them for a partnership. You might have already thought of it, but sometimes the obvious eludes us IM'ers.

Unless you're selling virtual gold, I'd stay away from the market. I played warcraft for over 4 years and I can tell you that most players buy gold. I dont know one person who's bought a WoW guide online.

Players can find out anything they need to know, simply by asking in the game.

If you play WOW and you value your account, stay away from buying and selling gold. It's against the TOS and in my experience (as a former WOW player myself) Blizzard has a "suspend first, ask questions later" attitude toward these kinds of things. I know quite a few people who have had their accounts suspended for buying or selling gold.

LMAO! I should tell my brother to write this one, since he met his current girlfriend through WOW. I always joke with her about how I thought all the girls in WOW were really guys and that MMORPG stood for "Many Men Online Role Playing as Girls".

Another reason to stay away from buying gold is the unscrupulous practices of some of the gold sellers.

Some of them, when you visit their sites to buy the gold, will (attempt to) install keyloggers on your machine. The next time you log into WoW, the keylogger captures your username/password and sends it off to the gold seller. The gold seller then logs into your World of Warcraft account, strips all the gear of your characters and sells it, transfering all the gold on those characters (including the gold you just purchased) back to a mule account.

The gold seller then sells all of that gold to the next sucker and installs a keylogger on his machine too.

It might sound like a tinfoil hat story, but it has got so bad that Blizzard have created a USB key authenticator that players can purchase to better secure their machines. (This malware can also be on sites that don't sell gold too.)

So it's really not a good idea to buy WoW gold.

its a niche where i always think that the kids look for free downloads of the guides (torrents, rapidshare)....not really a buyer's market. Could be wrong tho.

    Dylan,

The guide you create would have be focused on something specific like "How to Make ## Gold Jewelcrafting" or something similar. There are ton of WoW guides, but there's alway room for a well-written, well-marketed guide.

I know there is another warrior here that was in the works of creating a WOW guide, I will see if I can find his contact details again...his sure wasn't the typical make gold guide...was really a neat idea and he may be looking for partners.

It really is a very competitive niche, but one in which people spend money...and I mean $15 a month times 11M players= major market with major cash...

Anyways good luck and I will see if I can find the warriors info for you.

  • Alright. Geek talk ahead. You have been warned.

Avid WoW player here with 5 level 80 characters, though I'm on my 1st month of rehab - my 7th attempt to stop this vile addiction.

I have ghostwritten 2 of the better selling gold farming guides in the market. As I am tasked to update these guides often, I am made aware about how they are faring... and they are faring pretty well as my clients tell me.

What would be "hard sells" these days are the leveling guides. This is especially true since patch 3.0, the patch that hit right before the Wrath of the Lich King. Leveling from 21 to 70 has been streamlined. It's actually very, very possible to create a character from scratch and level him to 70 within 3 days.

Hence, leveling guides have taken a hit. They're not the hot sellers that they once were during the days of Vanilla WoW.

Now, with leveling guides out of the picture, gold farming guides would seem like the logical choice, right?

But gold farming guides will only sell well to:

    1. Noobs; and
    2. Casual players

People with level 80 characters know that gold isn't that hard to acquire at end game. A farming run for an hour over at Lake Wintergrasp when your faction is in control will net you a hundred crystallized fires, which are equivalent to ten eternal fires, which are equivalent to around 250 to 300 gold pieces. If you have maxed out mining, you can earn as much as 1,500 gold pieces per day just selling the bars you smelt.

Normal (non-noobs and non-casuals) WoW players won't touch a gold farming guide.

With your limited audience, you have to ask yourself: when do the new players enter the game?

Based on my research, new players join WoW every quarter. This would be April, July, October and January. The reason for this is that Blizzard's marketing pushes for the game happens during these months. They release budgets for TV spots, web ads and the likes at these intervals.

Also, November and December bring in a good amount of new players because of the holidays.

The release of expansions mark dramatic increases in the number of new players, of course, but this is a given.

The release of a new MAJOR patch, not an incremental one, can bring back old players if the content is exciting enough.

It must be noted that only gold farming guides and leveling guides have been made available on the web. Publishers think that these are the only information products about WoW that can be created and sold.

    This is untrue.

Any avid WoW player would know that there are facets of the game that demand lots of tips and tactics. From these, the following info products can be explored:

    1. PvP guide. Battlegrounds-centric.

    2. PvP guide. Focused on how to survive in a PvP server.

    3. PvP guide. Focused on tactics for 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5 arena matches. This can be very, very hot!

    4. Detailed raid guides. Should include every known tactic for every raid boss in the game. For example, there are 3 approaches to defeating Grobulus. The popular approach will cause some problems for first timers. The 2 alternative approaches can be accomplished with your eyes closed. Raiders are always on the lookout for these "easy ways" to beat a boss. It makes them look cool if they'll be the one to suggest it to the guild. Yes, most guilds have cleared existing content, but Ulduar is just around the corner, and from all indications, it's gonna take months for guilds to beat that raid instance.

    5. Collection of little known facts and cool tricks that a player can do with his class. Even hardcore players don't know everything about their respective classes. Take a look at this highly acclaimed thread from the official forums to get an idea of what I'm pointing out here.

    6. A macros guide.

    7. A "how to make your own add-on" guide.

    8. How about something novel? "How To Pick Up Chicks In The World Of Warcraft - And How To Know They're Real Girls."

I agree with Steve, though. If you're a new player in the industry of WoW info products, the best and fastest way to earn money is to release a high quality eBook as a viral marketing campaign to drive people to a gold selling website.

End of geek talk. Thanks for your time.

I am still grinding from 76 - 80, i HATE, HATE it, that's why i barely play ATM. After being 70 fo ro long and being in a raiding guild...nothing is worse than grinding up to 80 again. I love pvp and raiding tho.

I am not sure who would buy a wow guide, regardless of what guide it is (well, except for the "how to pick up girls in wow" lol) Casual gamers that don't know most of the info in a guide won't buy it. Hardcore gamers can probably write a better guide themselves, so no go there either. Normal players (~40 hours a week) probably won't bother to buy a guide either as they know more than enough as well.

Granted clickbank has a number of wow guides, so perhaps people do buy them, but I am hard pressed to find a reason why someone would buy. Now, selling gold is where it's at, if you live in China (or some other poor country) google "chineese goldfarmers" for some rather amusing info. So promoting wow gold selling sites could work well.

Judging from most peoples responses to this thread I can see most think this market hardly makes sales. It being one of the only niches I have targeted you can easily make 1-2 sales a day with a smaller type site. Of just one guide.

I may hate myself for getting the truth out there about this market but I would assume most of you will probably still believe your own opinions and stay away which just means more money for me.

Dylan I actually started an alliance leveling guide about 6-7 months ago. It was written before the outland leveling reduction so actually the guide itself could be used as either a leveling guide for outland or a lore master achievement guide.

The guide is in the form of say like Joana's Horde Leveling guide, I have put it on the back burner for awhile now as I am waiting to finish up the 70-80 section. My plan was always to pay someone to develop an ingame guide version as well.

If you are interested in making a product I would say honestly you could probably work on it yourself, I really would not try and partner with anyone... Just trust me, it's always better to be on your own for things like this.

The guide took me like 250+ hours to finish up, so I mean if you are really dedicated I think you could crank out any of these types of guides fairly fast.

If you are just worried about making the product why not buy a few of the different guides - gold/leveling/pvp etc and get some ideas how they lay themselves out and think how you can make something that is 1uping those guides.

Maybe if you want we could do something as say, develop 2 different seperate products taht we each sell and then offer eachothers guide on the back end at a discount of the normal sale price. That is how I would work on something with someone else in this market.

Hit me up in a PM if you have any questions or wanna toss some info at me, but yea if you thought you had a strong guide type I really think we could figure out some good ideas to keep our products seperate yet be able to help eachother achieve sales/ grow our individual lists.

On second thought. Yep, there's no money in WoW guides. So you may as well not even bother trying. Yep. Forget it. They don't sell very well, and you get huge numbers of refunds...

Damn you got me lol, Naa, I think that wow will always be growing and will have people feeding into guides and such to make there play time easier.

I mean not everyone wants to farm for 3 hours to get so little gold. Even so there's nothing wrong with wanting to test a market.

Honestly I think this market makes perfect sense. I know not everyone who plays WOW is going to want to buy a leveling guide, gold farming guide or anything like that, but there are some who will. Considering that the last time I played Blizzard was boasting over 8 million active players (I imagine that number's gone up quite a bit since then), that's a lot of potential customers if you come up with the right product.. and you already know they're willing to use their credit card to get something they're interested in because they're paying Blizzard $15/month to play a game.

BTW.. the money Blizzard is making off of this game is insane.. think about this.
    $15/month = (roughly) $.50 a day.
Let's use the most recent figure I have from the last time I played (about a year ago) and multiply that $.50 a day by 8 million active players. That's 4 million dollars a day, every day, all year long.

Anyone want to get together and build an MMORPG? lol

i had my fair share of guides promotion, eg banners on related site, sites, lenses...i never sold MANY of the guides.

There is approx 30 or even more guides on clickbank, MOST of them have pretty low payouts, making them unattractive for affiliates.

Furthermore, this is a HEAVY saturated market.....which in turn probably means also (again)...100% non-logical stupid insane high bids on PPC for a CB product which barely pays $20/sale. I would have to double check adwords again how much bids are.

I agree, maybe more specific guides are better...but i can guarantee you that there are zillions of generic "gold guides" and "leveling guides" affiliates out there..so, for PPC i *think* this i not the greatest thing to promote.

Problem 2) "WoW" and all relatad terms are trademarked and cant be used for ads.

This is a market where you need blogs, lenses, organic traffic. Then probably yes. A good forum marketing strategy might work also.

I'm not sure this is completely correct. World of Warcraft is a trademarked term and I don't see that used often, but I see WoW, WoW Gold, and variants used all the time in Adsense ads. WoW is an acronym and is pretty widely used by third parties all over the place. I'm not sure that it is trademarked.

On the other side of the coin, I see Adsense ads for Eve Online ISK quite a bit too, and they do use the trademarked term. So Google is still allowing trademarked usages.

Both Blizzard and CCP (the developers of Eve Online) really don't like gold selling in their games, and spend a lot of effort in tracking them down and banning players who engage in the practice. You'd think that if they could really hurt the gold sellers by getting Google to ban all usage of WoW or Eve Online in their ads, then they would.

Maybe this whole can't-use-a-trademark-in-adwords issue is a bit of a myth.

i know for sure you cannot use "WoW" since i was surprised this being the case. Ads wouldnt run because they had "WoW" in it.

    As for leveling guides:

You can do some KW research and you will see that there is an enormous volume for some freely available online leveling guides, eg. one called "james guide". They are actually VERY good.

So i can see it a bit problematic trying to sell a leveling guide with such very good free ones out there. Different story for gold/pvp guides.

For as long as WoW has been out, people would be surprised just how many new gamers are subscribing to the game all the time. I will agree that guides probably have suffered a minor decrease, but it's still a valid market in my opinion.

As a recovering addict for about the 12th time now, I "think" I am free and clear of WoW's evil grip on me! =p I absolutely HAD to quit because my marketing efforts were actually starting to suffer, it's ridiculous i know!

If I were ever to fall back into this game in any way my addiction would grab hold of me yet again! So i wish you luck in finding some partners and i definitely think WoW is still a viable niche to work.

If I were ever to fall back into this game in any way my addiction would grab hold of me yet again! So i wish you luck in finding some partners and i definitely think WoW is still a viable niche to work.
Thanks I'll do my best! lol And I wish you luck on your recovery lol. I just try to play in moderation.

I have no interest in World Of Warcraft, but while searching for valuable keywords, I stumbled upon these:

Warlock Macros - 8,110 exact searches (on google a month)
Warrior Macros - 6,600 exact searches
Rogue Macros - 6,600 exact searches
Druid Macros - 5,400 exact searches
Paladin Macros - 3,600 exact searches
Shaman Macros - 3,600 exact searches
Priest Macros - 2,400 exact searches

and all of them are still available in dot COM!

I'm thinking if you create simple dot com sites for them, and write blog or article posts about the different Macro's for the Character in the address, and then put adsense on the site, and other WOW related clickbank products for sell I'm sure you could easily make money! You most likely will get on the first page of google for the keyword in the address and posts (warlock macros, etc..) quite easily, if you know how to SEO each blog/article post. There's so many free ways you could bring targeted traffic to a WOW related site. Definitely a profitable niche!
