Ignoring the importance of Facebook fanpage?

I've spoke to someone earlier this week and I tried explaining the importance of having a fanpage to brand himself. He said what is the point of it when he could just add people to his profile as friends. I told him that not everyone will want to add him as a friend, but most wouldn't mind hitting the LIKE button to keep them informed with updates.

What are your opinions about this? Do you find fanpage important in branding yourself?

I think it is important but I do not think it the most important. For example response rate of fans on a fan page is of a lower percentage compared to an email campaign. I would say they are great if you just want to brand your self. If you are a direct marketer not so good. At least not right away but it's better than nothing!

I have a lot of friends suggest me to like their pages. Usually I ignore them because i don't see the point of it. But I'm pretty sure some of the people wouldn't mind to hit that like button just to be nice but never actually check the page out. So, yeah, I don't see the point of it.

Fanpages with fans that interact with the posts can be very beneficial for a well rounded marketing strategy. A self-hosted website is the base but a fanpage can do a lot for creating a brand.

A fanpage does lot to establish and cement the credibility of a business. There are some people who think that a fanpage is the same as running a business online, but that is not the case. A fanpage can support a business and even provide some traffic to the website, but cannot take its place.

Facebook fanpages are important, but they are not as important as the first post makes them out to be. The truth is that--and this was actually mentioned--many people ignore 'like' requests and many of those that do 'like' the page ignore the updates they receive.

Fanpages do have a purpose, such as when there is a big campaign, and it can remind your target market that you exist, but in terms of everyday marketing or updates, there are better or more effective ways to reach your target market and get more sales.

Fan pages with active fans are productive but it doesn't matter how many fans or likes you have if there is no interaction the numbers are useless.

Yeah, I have some fan pages with millions of fans, that have no reach because the pages are too untargeted. I also have fan pages with 40-50k fans that make me lots of money. Never ignore the importance of fan pages!

In my experience, your fan page will be dead if no one interacting on it. Its not about how many friends you got, its about how you find and deal real fan on your targeted niche/page.
