I've been thinking a lot recently, about creating my blog site with wordpress instead of just making one by myself (which is what I'm currently doing). And what I really wanted to ask was is using wordpress worth it? Is it a lot better then using a custom built site? Are the plugins that extraordinary and amazing? I m seeing a lot of sites with wordpress and barely any custom built ones.

I mean seriously should I consider using wordpress? Or is there a way to use plugins without implementing wordpress all together? (guessing not)

Thanks in advance, appreciate any help.

    It's worth it if you value your time. But you should avoid free themes imo.

    Lots of good, cheap ones on the WF and you might like some of Elegant Themes themes.

    Nobody really cares much about what theme you use, so it doesn't necessarily have to be a "custom" theme at all.

    It should be decent looking, however, and the faster it loads the better (this is one of Elegant Themes shortcomings - loads slower than most).

    Depends also what you will use the theme for and what kind of traffic you are expecting. If you are going to use the theme primarily for offline clients to see, for example, then it really doesn't need to load fast, but be impressive to those clients.

      Yeah I agree with you on that one, the free themes suck badly.

        WordPress is the software that the sites run on. It is not how the sites look. Its like Word, in the way that you use it to help create great looking documents.

        If you are a looking for a blogging platform, wordpress is one of the best , if not the best. I run all my sites on Wordpress now, as opposed to using plain html.

        I have a great, easy to use premium theme and I can make sites that are simple and sites that are plain looking. Like anything online, there are some fabulous plugins and some that are "not so fabulous".

        I use about 20ish on a regular basis, but I have gone through 100's of plugins looking for the ones that suit my needs the best.

        WordPress makes it relatively easy to change how a site looks without needing to know a huge amount about CSS.

        Altogether I am well pleased with my choice to use WP and with my choice of themes to make my sites.

    Im my opinion, wordpress is great. especially you want to create a blog site.
    It's easier to edit. and most importantly is there are ton of people are using.

    I remember when I had problem about using wordpress, and I just go to Youtube to find out the answer. The problem was not a problem anymore.

    Since you’re a developer and build your own custom blogs, technically, you could emulate much of the functionality WP plugins provide but it might take up too much of your time.

    As someone has already mentioned you’d save a lot of effort by taking advantage of WordPress’ existing code base and plugins.

    And regarding your question about using WP plugins in your custom blog that doesn't sound practical, as far as I see it.

    You will like Wordpress because

    1. It will help you learn how to install and manage it
    2. It has some plugins that only works with the platform - membership, sales funnel and others
    3. You'll also love the customizable themes
    4. You'll easily relate when people talk about blogs which is almost always Wordpress.

    Although you'll do better without Wordpress for salespages. I still recommend it as a blogging platform.

      WP is amazing for Blogging. You have everything done and just use them properly.
      with any theme you can start and a little customization of the theme will change your Blogs look and it will be SEO friendly.

      The plugins available in Wordpress are a great resource to learn
      how to make a site optimization.
      Anything can be done in Wordpress.

    Word-press is awesome due to the fact that yes it has loads of plug-ins but its just so easy to do pretty much anything, for instance i am just creating a full blown membership with WP, OP and Wishlist Member and its so easy and fast its shameful

    Definitely worth it if you want to start blogging. There is a little learning curve but it's worth the effort. There are thousands of people using WordPress so finding help with something is easy and one of the best advantages of using it. Yes you would need WordPress to take advantage of the many useful plugins.

    Another vote for WordPress. It does make things so much easier and faster - and chances are, whatever you want to do, "there's a [plugin] for that."

    The most important thing to learn is how to secure the WP site because hackers just love attacking WP sites.

    I really love this CMS, easy to customize and easy to operate.
    There's so many plugin out there, and choose the best and fit for your needs.

    I can't make a site to save my life, but with Wordpress I can get a theme like Optimize Press, Profits Theme, and even Headway and make a site in minutes.

    Before? Hire people, didn't like the look, blamed my mother, drank until 2am.

    Yup, that's why I went that route, and no I'm kidding about doing those silly things before I figured this out.

    Honestly, I learned Optimize Press because I didn't want to get a freelancer to fix my site every 5 minutes if I wanted to make a change or do a split test. It's the only thing technical I know how to do it online, and next to most people that isn't much.

    The difference is I make my money being productive, not focusing on specifics which don't make anyone money. Don't believe me? Look at drudgereport.com as they rake in millions with an ugly site that people love.

    I started building my own sites from scratch (HTML, then later CSS and JS) in the mid-90's; but now I use Wordpress almost exclusively, and I would need a pretty compelling reason to use anything else. Like others have said, there are some very nice themes available; and if you can think of a feature, there's probably a plugin to accomplish it.

    On the development side of things, Wordpress is a huge time saver.

This method isn't based on WP as I'm really not a WP fan at all (yeah I know... I'm an exception around here!) but if you're about to build a website on your own I suggest you take a look at it.       It depends on the type of business and site. If it's an affiliate site I would say use the wordpress. If it's a social site there's better platforms you can use.

    For me is super worth it. There are soooo many themes and widgets that can make your life easier... some free, some paid. You can even have the iPhone/iPad app and enter new posts through them!

    At the beginning i was lost and didn't know where to start, but once i grasped the concept as how it works... piece of cake!

      For me the strong points about Wordpress are having so many themes and plugins at your disposal. You can virtually build any kind of website with Wordpress, because of the themes and plugins.

    I can't make any website without Wordpress, it make things so much easier and faster. We can easily find a lot of theme and plugin both free and premium, and it is also multipurpose, we can build any kind of website with Wordpress.

    Alright I'm going to get it later on the free themes are enraging. My custom theme rocks, and WP looks to confusing to use atm. I'll get wordpress when I get some money to buy a premium theme.

    There are plenty of good free themes out there, I wouldn't let that stop you from using Wordpress. All the available plugins (free and paid) are just OUTSTANDING, I wouldn't trade it for anything.
