Why Do So Many People Fail online?

Now being in the position of coaching others to their success I come face to face with this question in one form or another again and again.

I thought ya'll might do some brainstorming with me and we could each offer our own insight into this question. I sure wish I would have learned more about "what didn't work online" before all the things that I tried.

Or is it not possible to avoid the failures on the way to success?

In fact is it maybe better that we don't because those failures become a part of our definition of success? Offering us a way to better assist others?me personally, it was clarity about a Definite PLAN, sticking to that Plan and having insight into the length of time I would have to PERSIST with it. I sure took l o n g e r than I wanted and budgeted for.

All the hurry hurry rush rush in our world on top of our own impatience and "sales pitches" offering "quick profits" etc. etc. have me inviting more perspective on this.

So What are you thoughts? WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE FAIL ONLINE?
What would you say to someone close to you just getting started?

Here are some of the reasons Why I think most people fail:"

    1. Don't have a proven system to follow
    2. Jump from one system to the next without mastering the first
    3. Easily distracted
    4. Give up too quickly

    Most people fail online because:

    1) It takes work... lot's of work!
    2) They don't have a plan (the simplest plans are the best).
    3) If they have a plan, they don't work it constantly.
    4) They give up too soon.

Emerson said, "The only thing that can grow is the thing you give energy to."

If that statement is true, and it is, why would anyone want to focus on failure? I think one of the reasons people fail is because they have so many distractions. And with that, I'm off to work. Good luck...

Information Overload is killing the efforts of vast amounts of people online; myself included, honestly. There are just so many avenues to take; and each one can draw you in with the unavoidable hype of "This Is The One"....
Too few marketers provide a plan; they push one product after another. A product is WORTHLESS without a simple plan to follow.

They don't want to work. They want to read threads about making money and how it is all done without doing it. Then they want to give out advice based on regurgitated ideas with no real world experience to back it up.

They don't treat this like a real business. A brick and mortar business takes 5 years at least to get out of the red. If you consistently worked hard at an internet business for 5 years you would make a killing. Its hard work...enough said.

This is a question that's been asked a million times and you will get a million different answers. That being said here is my 2 cents.

First off people are always being conditioned to believe that making money on the internet is magic. We all know this isn't the case. Instead of doing the necessary research into whatever niche someone goes into they are bombarded with others screaming how easy it is. This causes information overload and thus the failure of a business.

Now as far as I am concerned there are only a few things one must do to succeed.

1: you have to LOVE whatever your wanting to do. If you don't really love the niche you choose and are passionate about it then you don't stand a chance.

2: You have to do your homework and find out just what is needed by others and fill that need. This will take time. (Time = Something most people don't consider an investment),
time is an investment and a major part of any marketers success. Use it wisely.

3: Marketing is work the big difference is your the boss and if your like me that will be the worst boss you ever have. You have to be willing to spend hour upon hour working with your niche to keep it up to date and working properly. People don't understand this is a job and not like the 9 to 5 day job they want to leave.

My recommendation to anyone wanting to be a niche marketer is find someone you trust and learn from them since they have been there and done that already. Stop following the heard and be an individual. Learn from those willing to teach and take small steps at first.

Success comes with time and WORK not out of thin air.

Most people who venture online have no clear systematic plan or direction. If only a professional showed them the ropes, which would of course, set them back a couple hundred to a grand.

It all starts with research and learning the how this game REALLY works.

I honestly believe its one of the easiest questions to answer.

People pay too much attention to what others are doing, and not enough attention to their own efforts.

Sure, anyone can read the 'overnight' success stories of a "guru". And once your checking account is $97 lighter and you have completely moved on a week later, you realize that the guru only got rich from providing false hopes to people who are easy to influence.

Anyone in their right mind would be silly to think that a successful business owner would sell you the secrets of their business and create direct competition for any price that is less than 10x what they claim to make monthly.

Develop what works for you, and keep quiet about it if its not general knowledge.

I agree with most of the posts on here. I think a big reason is too much info on the internet, and yeah gurus saying it's easy when it's not. And jumping from one project to the next. Giving up too easily. I can honestly say that's been my downfall. Now I am learning to take my time, stick to a plan, set goals, and be persistant.

It might take a year, maybe two, but if I stick to it, eventually I will get there.

A lot of people who try and get into online businesses are looking for a "quick buck" and don't really want to work for it.

I am a copywriter and so can only speak for that industry (but I suspect it is the same in others). It takes lots and lots of work and time to be successful. And with more and more people getting into the business the work and time are only increasing.

Anyone getting into the business has to realize it is not going to be an overnight success thing. You have to build up a reputation and business. Which takes hard work.

But it is completely worth it!

Many don't have a plan, yet many wouldn't know how to put a plan together. If they had a plan guideline they could probably follow it. Also many don't even know what they are good at. You don't know if you are good at something if you don't know it exists. All the jumping around gets frustrating and it's easy to quit when you are frustrated. Put a lot of those people in a classroom environment with a teacher, there would be many more successors.

They jump around from system to system looking for the one that will absolutely guarantee them to make it big with pretty much no work.

They never find it and always how that the next product will be the answer to their prayers. It never is.

They need to focus on one thing or system until they succeed with that until even thinking about another system.

There are many ways to make money online, they just need to give one of them a chance and their entire focus.

        Hello,

I think most people fail in their internet venture because they don't really have a fixed plan. Most people just go from one half conceived plan to another without giving it much thought.

A lot of patience and hard work is required. But above all a good mentor is very essential especially when you are starting out.

One has to treat the online venture just like any other business venture.

Ditto on that - only thing I'd add is not 'believing in yourself' - having the positive mindset! The power of your subconscious mind can create the life you want.

in other words, marketing and selling products to a hungry crowd.. I'm pretty sure they all teach people to do just that

I believe it's more of a mindset problem than anything else.

As an employee, you will get your monthly salary no matter what happens but it is subjected to a ceiling, also whether your boss like you and company profitability.

But when you do IM, you may not see much results even after spending time and money, but slowly, cents by cents, dollars by dollars, once you get it, you are on a roll!! No salary limitation, fire your boss, financial freedom.

Because if you have the mindset, you will have discipline, persistance and will bite the bullet and come out with your own plan to make things happen.

Of course, it really helps when you surround yourselves with those who have made it, this will definitely strengthen your mindset.

This does not just apply to online business, in my opinion. The same will probably apply to Stock market trading, Forex Trading! Part of it is probably mindset! Luck does come into it, although with a strong mindset can make a difference to your luck, not entirely though. I am not that successful in my online trading, but I know what I needed to do. Only if I can focus on what I know needed to be done. I made plan I identified the important tasks needed to be done. For example, right now I need traffic, that means posting articles to Articles Ezines. Trouble is writing is so boring. I tried out sourcing, specifying what needed to be written and getting the right ghost writers are just as boring! Why can't you lot find your way to my blogs, they are so good! (My own opinion only!) When you get there, buy everything insight regardless of cost, OK?

Laziness is certainly not the whole story - of course it is a factor in many people, but another big factor is desperation. So many people in need of FAST money are lured in by all the promises of quick bucks, because they can't afford the time it takes to build a real, solid business online. So they are sitting ducks for every kind of flashy sales letter that comes along. This of course is exploited and encouraged over and over by established marketers... not Warriors, of course, I'm talking about those OTHER marketers

Seriously, the promise of big bucks, as a tool to increase conversions, too often takes precedence over honest teaching. Of course it's possible to make big money - I know that at least some of you out there are doing it. It's why we're all here. Few of us looking for pin money and nothing more.

But it's not simple as ABC, as the guru would have us believe. The reality is more like ABCDEFGHIJKLMONPQRST etc., but what you get from them usually feels something more like _BC__F_HIJ_L . It doesn't necessarily mean that the product is no good. Some of course are absolute parrot dung, but in many cases it's just that we simply haven't got the right knowledge & experience of the right basics to be able to link that info together -- and so the product is useless to us.

And of course what few will admit to you is that significant money is NEVER going to happen anyway until somewhere after "Q", and by the time you figure that out, you are already stuck on F wondering what happened to D and E. And you give up in disgust.

Does this analogy work for you? It certainly sums up for me exactly what my experience has been up until recently.

BUT I have learned a lot, calmed down, developed a bit of a thick skin -- and now I am really beginning to focus, build on what I know, and take one step at a time -- instead of standing around gawping at what all the big boys are boasting about. And it feels good.

It's amazing how much better some horses will run once the blinkers are applied, and all they can see is the finish line, instead of the others horses trying to get past them.

    cheers

Ken, that was an excellent analogy.

From my experience it has been just like that. I bought about 2-3 WSO's that didnt provide the formula entirely, just bits and pieces of it. So instead of jumping from one thing to the next, I combined everything I learned with the experience I picked up since I started 3 months ago into a formula that I think will work.

I've been working at this non-stop since January and made 2 sales by writing articles (learning effective article marketing is a chore IMO) but now when my next batch of articles are approved they will point to my website and hopefully start converting...I'm keeping my fingers crossed :p

I think that distraction is a big part of why people don't succeed - we get bombarded with offer after offer and end up buying and then trying to implement them and then we forget what we should have been doing in the first place.

Focus is the main word (in my case anyway)
Planning on what you are going to do and STICK TO IT
Implement what you have planned until you see results before you go onto your next project.

That's what is working for me at the moment.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[638782].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author hotlinkz
One of the primary reasons is lack of focus. People get distracted and before they know it - end up doing a lot of things very ineffectively (been there-done that).

Another reason, lack of professionalism and no business acumen.

Think about the consequences if people displayed the same behavior when starting offline businesses.
