Blogging For Dollars?

I have been blogging for years and have earned pretty solid income from my blog posts and have created some pretty successful income for my offline clients. Here are some tips for monetizing a blog. Please add to this thread with other ideas on making money with a blog.

Building and Quantifying Blog Traffic
The first step in monetizing any blog is quantifying the website's traffic to get an idea of what type of advertising would work best. Blogs that attract a large amount of traffic or a highly specific demographic may opt for different monetization methods than those that attract lower traffic numbers or more generic demographics. The two best programs to quantify and analyze your traffic are Google Analytics and Quantcast. Get your blog set up on both of these to track your results.

Google Analytics
Google Analytics is an industry-standard free analytics program that provides statistics like the number of page views, time spent on a given page and keywords that online visitors typed into search engines to reach your pages.

Quantcast
Quantcast is a free service designed to provide demographic information based on a user's location.

After these programs are up and running, the next step is to build traffic to the blog over time. The best way to do this is by writing strong content and optimizing that content to be easily accessible to search engines. You can also use Social Media such as Facebook and Twitter to drive traffic to read your blog.

Search Engine Optimization
SEO is the process of building a blog to enhance its visibility in search engines like Google and Yahoo!. Often, this is done by properly using HTML and identifying keywords with high traffic and little competition. Do some keyword research and then write your blog using the keywords you want to be ranked on, make sure the keywords are in the Title, Headline and 3 to 5 more times in blog post.

Google AdSense and PPC Programs
The most popular way to monetize a website that receives little to modest traffic (less than 200,000 visitors per month) is by using a pay-per-click (PPC) advertising program like Google AdSense. These programs pay website owners a variable amount of money each time a visitor clicks on an advertisement that's automatically generated based on the page's content. You can also use ClickBank, they offer high payouts than Google Adwords and you will be placing banners instead of text ads.

Selling Ad Space on your Blog Page
Many popular blogs attracting more than 100,000 visitors per month, or ones that target desirable demographics, may be better off directly selling ad space. Often, these ads are usually sold on a CPM basis, but some can choose a blend of CPM, PPC and CPA advertising methods. Ultimately, the blog owner should test and see what works best. Those looking to setup their own advertising systems can checkout programs like OpenX or inClick.

More on Monetization
The techniques listed above are certainly not the only ways to make money from home through monetizing a website. Blogs with highly desirable premium content may also want to consider a subscription-based model where readers pay a monthly fee to access certain content. This can be done with programs like MagicMembers or MemberMouse. Also, blog owners can attempt to sell products as affiliates and earn a commission if viewers click on the provided link and buy the products. There are many sites that allow affiliates to promote their products. ClickBank and Amazon are two popular ones, but there are many alternatives.

To Wrap Up
The best solution is usually to try different options and see what works. Google and others provide very easy ways to get started, while more complex systems can be implemented as the blog traffic grows larger. Unique ideas like subscriptions and affiliate marketing can often be hit-or-miss, depending on the visitor demographic being targeted. Enjoy and keep on Blogging !!

I'm gonna check out quantcast for the first time.

How would you monetize a blog that is basically a day by day of your progress. Essentially from noob to making decent income online?

Is the only way a subscriber list? Not sure what readers would feel if there were adsense ads on a personal blog discussing IM. What do you think?

    Thanks for the post.

I run one of my IM blogs with Google Adsense and I also use clickbank ads. My main focus is on content of my blog and my signature, I just shoot for when they leave my blog, they go to either adsense or clickbank.

I have found that people need a truckload of traffic to make money. All this hot air about getting rich quick I mean CLICK is crap. People need to be ready to work long hours creating quality content to play at this game.

Truckload of traffic and not following the herd. Websites that users create the content and backlinks kicks the crap out of mindlessly writing SEO articles.

I am all for selling ad space and having a loyal follower base that you can sell products to. Even though lists can be quite profitable. A blog actually solidifies loyalty more than a list. You need to do some hard work though.

This post is very useful to me. But my real problem is how to attract traffic to my blogs. If I am having proper traffic, definitely the monetizing will take place.

Do some Keyword Research, so your blogs can rank organically or build a massive Social Media following on Facebook and Twitter and get traffic that way.

I am a pretty strong blogger myself and would have to say that it takes well written articles to keep people reading. Blogging is hard work and there is no short cuts to building a stable business that will last for years. The best method I have found is just write naturally as if you were talking to a good friend.

Great point, good writing is the key to being successful. I do write my blogs different from my articles though.

I do SEO, Email Marketing, Word of mouth Marketing and Social Media Marketing with Facebook and Pinterest. It is doing good, however I have to try PPC and Quantcast. I haven't tried those yet.

This is the first I've heard of Quantcast. It sounds like possibly the missing piece of the puzzle for me.

I agree with lots in the thread: blogging is still a great way to boost business and even operate a biz. Too many blogs, though, try to copy everything, and that's where they are lackluster. Instead focus on:

      - being positive. Keep negativity out, especially politics (unless you have a political blog, of course).

      - some multimedia sprinkled in here and there (images, photos, videos, audio files, downloads, etc)

      - updated ads / links to products and services (many people don't test these regularly, and often links lead nowhere)

      - updated products and services that you sell (test what you are selling - -do YOU like it)?

      - your blogs image, your image and what you are promoting: make these be in sync. In short, don't go on about having a Christian blog or a blog for children's clothing, for instance, and then have ads that promote adult products in the sidebars or a comic image of yourself as the blog host wearing red horns.

Excellent points, it takes time to change a website but with a blog, you can control the conversation, talk about real time events and brand yourself as an expert in your industry.
Why are the top bloggers getting the most traffic? Because people follow the leader...

Another thing to add to this is to build a community around your content. Basically, this just means getting people involved in commenting and sharing. As everyone has said, this requires some major work but the payoffs can be great.

There are so many blogs out there that aren't perfectly SEO optimized but they're COMMUNITY optimized. Having an engaging personality, conversational writing style, and a true desire to connect with others is definitely a mark of a community optimized blog.

From there, if you really get to know your community, you're going to have a good idea of exactly what it takes to monetize that blog.

    Thanks for the tips.

Also, another way that you can monetize your blog is through in-text advertising this doesn't even use up any space on your page, it just embeds into your content.
