Managed VPS for hosting client sites?

Hi guys,

Looking at purchasing a managed vps to host any client sites as I'm not that knowledgeable about hosting. Also with this at least I know the clients will get full 24/7 support when needed. I would probably be starting out with a level 4/5 vps from Hostgator as this would allow quite a few sites (most would be small 3-5 page wordpress sites for plumbers, bands, joiners etc). Has anyone done something like this and can comment?

Thank you for your kind words Mr. Kyle! We are working to add a new uplink to a quality IP bandwidth, deploying a new High Availability DNS cluster, and working to add a new Content Delivery Network as options service to accounts.

Yes, in this case, you will need a fully managed VPS. However, do check with vendors about their management level. Some come with semi-managed only, that they don't monitor your VPS. Some advertise full-managed, but they only do when you request. You would need a pro-active managed one, that the vendor take care server sides tasks, monitor services and fix the issues before they harm your online business.

Wondering if they are existing already? And how about the usage? Why do you think you will need a VPS? If they are small sites, you might be better in a shared hosting environment, but with a powerful vendor who can offer services on a cluster system. Let us know more details of your websites, then we can advice you to a correct way.

    rgds,

I would be interested in find a good vps service. I'm looking to have video opt in and pre selling videos for a number of niches. Plus my post opt in videos will be between 10-20 mins. Would vps host sites be suitable for my needs? Or would it be too much

Do you have any idea about the required space and bandwidth?

I'd recommend using shared/reseller hosting. I really don't see a need for a VPS, other than that someone told you they think you do. You'd be wasting money on resources you wont be using.

    Stick with shared/reseller.

EDIT: Also, just noticed you said "the clients get 24-7 support"..... I don't recall many providers that give end user support. You would be solely responsible for supporting your customers.

Absolutely NOT "shared" hosting, unless you think it would be cool if some of those providers would disable your account/your hosted sites because of a single plugin etc. on your sites using too much CPU etc. Can easily happen. Not really the best way to go about it.

I personally went through many VPS providers already, right now i am with wiredtree (NOT the cheapest, but service/support phenomenal)...but you might also want to look into hostnine or solarvps. All of them are pretty good.

Sorry, there's nothing the OP has said that warrants using a VPS other than just "wanting" to. Find yourself a quality web host that's not selling unlimited services and you wont have that problem.

He wants "a few sites", WP mainly..and this alone can be a problem. Depends what plugins he might be using, what traffic to expect etc. I had more sites disabled than what i count on a hand, for idiotic reasons on various shared hosters - i simply cannot recommend this as a basis for a solid business.

The other advantage is that with managed, he could get ANYTHING done by them (since he says he is not experienced)..including migration, setting up backups etc...

On the other hand: Yes, each's requirements might be different..what works for one might not be sufficient for another.

True, to some extent. 99.9% of people who complain that their sites got shut off for using the lest bit of resources are with some unlimited everything bargain basement web host, where in fact you're even more limited.

Ehh..not entirely true. A lot of this depends on the company as well the specific tech. Some places aren't going to troubleshoot crappy code & poor plugins.

As a web host myself, I would not recommend wasting money on a VPS for this, but instead finding a web host that provides a quality hosting environment, limits accounts per server & doesn't offer unlimited disk space/bandwidth.

You don't hear people complaining about their sites getting shut down for excessive resources at places like StableHost, MDD, LiquidWeb, Sparrow etc. You only hear this problem with places like HostGator, Dream Host, BlueHost, Host Monster etc. Check the differences in those 2 groups of companies.
