So, for those of you who hire writers....

What do you look for in a candidate? What makes a writer ideal?

Do you prefer someone with a passion for the craft of writing, or someone who knows how to stuff in keywords?

Well, a good writer should be able to craft a piece that is both search engine friendly and reader friendly.
Other than that, the writer should be able to make any topic interesting and simple.

Whatever you do, do it well. Do it so well that when people see you do it, they will want to come back and see you do it again and they will want to bring others and show them how well you do what you do.~ Walt Disney.

One thing is a pretty good indication: a successful record of achieving syndication (and I don't mean in article directories and Web 2.0 sites!).

Here's the point: if someone has regularly and reliably produced articles (I'm guessing you're talking about articles, and not copywriting, here?) which publishers with ezines/newsletters and Webmasters with niche-appropriate sites have chosen voluntarily to share with their own readers/visitors/subscribers, that's the effective hallmark of quality.

It's a simple, very pragmatic description of "quality", but for the writer's clients, it's the one that best translates into income.

Writers to avoid, in my opinion, are probably those whose websites discuss "keyword density", "latent semantic indexing" and/or "passing copyscape" on their home pages.

"Good communication is very important as well."

Agreed, sir. Communication is the main directive of writing, wouldn't you say?

I write articles for a variety of different blogs and sites and for myself it is always a mixture of the two. First of I have a passion for good quality writing, I find it a joy to craft a well written piece, but most people do need to have certain keywords in the articles as many of them are for SEO purposes. In my opinion, you can't have one without the other, to be a good paid writer you need to offer the full package, and this is generally reflected in my buyers' requirements.

Preferable someone who has a background on SEO content marketing. And the basics should go along with it like good control of grammar and spelling.

I like someone that can also spin the articles as well because it saves me time of course you will have to pay a little more but its worth it. Needless to say a bit of a SEO background is preferred.
