Do you realize how often you see a guarantee for a product?

Whenever you read a website... or the newspaper... or your junk mail... or television.... you see many, if not most, products have a money back guarantee.

Most people use it for their comfort level... if your product is good, most people will not ask for their money back... or double their money back.. or whatever your guarantee states.

As you come across these guarantees, we unconsciously measure and judge the guarantees strength. The stronger the guarantees promise, the more comfortable you are in the value and truths as advertised for the product--and you put up money to buy it.

A Strong "ironclad" guarantee will motivate a consumer to pay more than they would for a similar product that does not have a guarantee as strong as you do.

Here are some different wording for string guarantees:

-If you're dissatisfied for any reason, at any time, i'll give you a full refund, absolutely no questions asked!

- If you're not satisfied, just return the product-- heck, we'll even pay for the return shipping!

-If you're dissatisfied for any reason, at any time, we'll give you a full refund. No questions asked.

- Try this dongle for 30 full days. if you are unsatisfied for any reason, just let us know at 800-555-1212 and we wil refund your money the same day.

- Unlimited revisions until you are delighted!

Now...which of these guarantees would make you feel the most comfortable?

I prefer the impersonal approach. Rather than saying something like "I will refund your money...." I would leave out the "I". Something more like...

Your purchase is backed by a 30 day, no questions asked iron clad guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied, your money will be cheerfully refunded.

That's definately true... but when you are selling a product by recommending it, the "I" is needed to show that you stand behind the product personally...

The reasons many such guarantees are offered, is that it does increase the confidence of the buyer who will think they have nothing to lose.

In reality, most of those who are dissatisfied do not even bother to request their refunds. Also, on many digital products like on clickbank, it is made in an effort to reduce the amounts of dissatisfied people doing chargebacks or running around in every forum saying "This product is a scam! I paid $197 for info that I can find on wikipedia for free". They get their refund and just move on.

And when something is ordered by Credit card, its so easy if someone really wants a refund to do a chargeback, that there really is no increase in risk for a seller to give the refund without all the hassle...

In most of the countries I have lived, guarantees are statutory obligations upon suppliers.

Spain recently increased the statutory guarantee to 2 years on non consumables.

Most written guarantees that I see on the internet actually diminish my statutory rights so any purchases I make on line (well, when I start again) are made on the understanding that the written guarantee will not affect my rights under the stautory guarantee.

I hear a lot of people talk about crapy products and how its not fair that they paid for them etc. You know I think that proper research should be conducted and there wouldn't really be a need for a refund if you took the time to get to know the seller and not get caught up in the hype of the product. Its kinda like buying a CD. There are some artists that you will go by the CD regardless if you've only heard he first single or none at all. You trust that artist and love their music. So if we applied the same attitude to IM there would be a lot less refunds or even a need for guarantee.
