Anyone working in China?

I am going to China in a couple of days to attend the annual Canton Fair.

It's the first time I am visiting the country, so I would like to know what are the things I have to prepare to make sure I can still run my business.

I need access:
1. Ebay
2. Fiverr
3. Gmail
4. Hostgator
5. go Daddy
6. oDesk
7. Dropbox

Will there be any issue?

From what I understand, you may have a problem accessing sites outside of China.

Not sure if the Chinese government has changed this or not.

From what I know it is still more of news and social media sites.
I just need some confirmation on accessing the sites I mentioned earlier for business operation to run.

Ever notice that people who spend money on WSO, memberships and courses, are always complaining about being broke and not making any money ?

They should have bought ASSETS instead.

From what I know, there are a lot of limitations on Internet there and you might be having problem accessing some sites.

I don't know about other websites, you cannot access Gmail and Dropbox for sure!

Find some proxy sites online before you go. It's going to be tough! Good Luck!
    You can't access facebook either.

Those websites will most likely all be blocked, if you are in Hong Kong that is fine but if you are in mainland China, you will not have access.

I've been living here for over 2 years.

All the sites on your list will work without a vpn.

That said, you won't be able to use google docs.... and google will revert to google.com.hk

Also, I've had occasional trouble with fiverr, sometimes the style sheet doesn't load.

The sites mentioned by Ashley249 wont work, China's very good at blocking these.

I'd recommend heading over to Astral VPN, I think they have a month free trial, at least they did.

You should be ok, but to be on the extra safe side, use a GOOD vpn.

I was thinking of heading to the fair... may still head down, what days are you going?

        Hi,

I went to the first phase of the Canton Fair mainly for the looking at the electronics and household appliances. It has been an amazing experience here so far.

I am still at China GuangZhou now and honestly, I am very impressed with the development here. There are English on all the main transportation and wifi access in most restaurants I went to. McDonalds and Starbucks can be found in most malls.

        I have no problem accessing:
        1. eBay
        2. Dropbox
        3. Gmail
        4. PayPal
        5. Warriors forum

        Through my iPhone.

I managed to carry on my online business without any issue so far.

Overall, it has been a great experience... In fact personally, i felt that travelling in China Guang zhou is better and safer than my Hong Kong trip.

Yes, HK is way expensive, and there's very little free wifi, you only get 15 min in starbucks.

GZ is a first tier city, so you'll find all amenities... a lot of people have this weird idea of China, that everyone's on bikes etc... The place is developing at an icredible rate. Enjoy it.

You should take a trip to Yangshuo dude... some of China's most amazing scenery, a night bus away.

    Hey Rendell,

Are you still in GZ? I am currently living in this city, and if you are still here, we could maybe meet.

I am new to the internet marketing thing, but I know the market here fairly well. Maybe we could exchange information.

Let me know if you are interested.

By contrast, I am currently escaping from Guangzhou these three weeks while the trade fair is on. I am hiding out in western Guangxi to avoid all the tripled hotel prices and general price gouging.

I will be back in about a week's time, so that I can continue work on a ebook that I am compiling about all the different wholesale markets in the city. I always found the trade fair to be over rated, and want to offer an alternative for smaller scale entrepreneurs.

If anybody is still around I would be happy to meet up. I used to do a lot of small scale export for eBay, but these days I am moving much more into 3D printed products.

I am living in China. All sites you mentioned are accessable in China except that you need to use the https version of DropBox, that is https://www.dropbox.com/ instead of http://www.dropbox.com/.

Wish you have a nice stay in China.

You may not be able to visit some sites in China.
but do not worry you can use a proxy to visit a site that locked there.

I've been in China over 3 years now, trust me, get a VPN.

I was using strong VPN for about a year, their support is good, but it's a little pricey, and not very easy to set up, plus, never got it to work on my smart phone... I got an email from Astrill for a free month trial, and, it's the dogs... works like a charm, and set it up in 5 min on my phone.

      https://www.astrill.com/

So ye, get yourself a VPN, especially if you plan on doing IM work.

I've been here more than 10 years now, I used StrongVPN till last year (still have subscription paid left for couple months) best and fastest i use now is https://pandapow.co/ way faster than StrongVPN and cheaper also, Strongvpn disconnects a lot. all works from that list even Dropbox but it can be some different areas, different blocks as for safety aspect, definitely Hong Kong is most safest before any mainland cities keep that in mind. *edit Warriorforum is blocked atleast in my location have to use VPN to come in, just noticed it.

Oops -- this is from 2012. Didn't notice that at first. I'll leave my comments in case any other person has these concerns.

You should not have problems accessing the sites you mentioned. But, let us just say, internet speed has not exactly kept pace with China's huge growth. Time out issues can occur more often than you'd like though.

You won't be able to access Facebook and Youtube, Twitter, blogger and others on the mainland. In Hong Kong -- no problem getting those sites.

If you're in China for any length of time -- you can take up the suggestions others have given and get a VPN service - which will allow you to access any site (including blocked ones) and noticeably increase your net speed
