hi,

i use phpbb & the SMF to create a discussion forum...

but i have noticed many of the phpbb sites have had too many bots
and spammers...and i had to delete all my posts because many of
them were spamming...

is there a way to REDUCE the # of spammers & bots
without having to check them off one by one?

thanks
BJ

We manually approve everyone after email notification so they cannot get into the forum. Our influx of bot sign-ups has slowed down. But still have days when they bombard us. If there is another way I would like to know also.

Just take a volunteer from your forum member to become moderator. Like Warrior Forum, all posts will be reviewed manually. I hate when there is a forum that rely on script to track spam message. No matter how good the script, it can have the same judgment sense as human. You will turn down a lot of your forum visitor, because many of their posts will be classified as spam, even the good ones.

I don't own any forum sites. But, the most important thing to do is to have really a good moderator for your forum in order for your forum not be full of spam. The moderator must be realistic and know who use bots. So, that you can leaser the spams.

    Hi,

    Great Question.

For the reason that you mention and others, I do not use those. I prefer to spend the small fee each month (around $6) to have a websitetoolbox.com forum or message board as they call it. If you don't mind ads it's even free.

Website Tool Box has features where you can set different levels of sign up and posting. I think they even have a captcha feature if you want to use it.
