Find a leader in your industry to help you

I keep hearing this as advice. Find a leader in your industry to help you and mentor you.

Why exactly does that mean and how do you do it?

Does it really make any difference if a leader helps you?

My experience has been it is hard to get a leader in my field to even acknowledge my existence let alone chat with them.

They are at the top. Why would they want to help me or share their secrets with me? They don't seem to want to either.

Take for example, someone wanting to start a social media page contacts zuckerberg asking for advice and help. It just isn't going to happen.

it seems to me that you have to make somewhat of a name for yourself first before others start to take notice and then want to collaborate with you.

Thoughts, comments, experiences?

Don't bother trying to find a "leader" to "mentor" you, unless you know what you're doing. Just try your best with what you know, learn by reading posts on here and articles on other sites. Things that worked for these leaders may not work for you anyway. I'd much rather make friends with people of my same situation and status, and we'd just help eachother out.
