Great email this morning from a potential customer

Hey all,

Thought I'd post this here because I know there are a bunch of people in a similar situation as my...er, prospect?

Either way, here is her email, as well as my response.

Hi Cam,

For a number of months now I have been researching various avenues by which I can make a decent income from my home. I am a science teacher by trade although I have worked in the field of pharmaceutical sales for the past 8 years. Here's the thing - I have a beautiful new addition to my family who is now 7 months old. More than anything I would like to find a means of employment that would compliment my desire to be fully present in his life. To be frank and to the point I AM NOT COMPUTER SAVY!!!! I can do the basics but that is about it. Having said that, I wonder if your programs would be condusive to my skill set (or lack thereof)? Are your programs and information user-friendly to ameteurs like myself? I have to be honest, even as I read your information I was unfamiliar with some of the lingo. If this is too challenging for an ameteur like myslf please let me know and I will continue on my search. I sincerely appreciate your response. In closing, I wish you continued success with your efforts.

Sincerely,
(Name Removed)
My response:

Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

First off, congrats on the birth of your son! As a father of 3 little boys I can tell you you're in for a wild ride! They're actually the reason I do all this "internet marketing stuff" in the first place. My oldest (now almost 10) was diagnosed with Autism when he was 2 years old, and I got into this business to help pay for some of the therapies and supports he/we needed... and it worked! He is now "mainstreamed" into 4th grade and doing quite well...

So let me advise you not to give up. You're on the right track by even asking the questions you have. There are a lot of opportunities for earning money online, and they run the gamut from inexperienced/tech "un-savvy" to super-geek tech dude/dudettes. You just need to find a niche you're comfortable with - and stick with it - until you see some results.

But... let me be totally upfront with you (because I know I would appreciate that if I were in your shoes). You're talking about starting an online business... or at it's very basic level... earning $$$ using your computer, right?

...and at the same time you're telling me you're not tech savvy?

Have you considered that maybe that's a bad mix?

The good thing is you can bridge that gap pretty easily by seeking out what you need to know online. You can become an expert on almost any subject after spending a few hours researching it online. So if there's some jargon you don't get, or you need to know how to buy a domain and point it to a hosting account (just thinking of some of the basics)... look it up.

Alas, I don't think my stuff is going to help you right now (maybe down the road?). I sense you would probably end up frustrated and possibly confused, and that might turn you off from this whole "internet thing"... I'd hate to see that happen, and even worse I'd hate to be the cause.

If you need any suggestions, ideas, or to point you in the right direction - I'd be happy to. Just let me know. I don't want to throw out a bunch of ideas here because that's not what you asked.

Regards,
Cam
So what's my point in all this? Am I just trying to show my fellow warriors how uber-cool and altruistic I am because I can turn down an order?

Nope.

My prospect knew enough to ASK FIRST, and I could tell my product was a BAD FIT. Why try to force something on her that I knew was going to cause her (and probably me in terms of customer service) grief?

And also I wanted to point out one small, often overlooked, detail.

The reason we're on this forum is to learn/share information related to making money using our computers. We're talking about INTERNET MARKETING here.

By it's very nature it requires some level of tech-savvy.

I certainly wouldn't start running a hedge fund without understanding the basics of financial markets. But... look how many people did, and look at the mess we're in because of it!

Just something to think about... I'll shut up now.

-Cam

That was a good email from the customer and your answer was excellent.

You may have created a future customer and avoided acquiring an unhappy buyer unable to use your product. I've often wondered how many complaints about "poor customer service" come from those who buy products without the basic knowledge to use the product effectively.

Your honest response avoided customer service hassles and spared the woman frustration and disappointment.

Very smart way to handle someone. Why set yourself up for a disappointed refund later?

Not to mention when this guy is ready or has a friend who is he will point you out in a second for being honest and straight.

Good job! It's nice to see a few of us still have morals.
