  Not necessarily. More like it's time to open one's eyes and realize that opportunity and possibility are EVERYWHERE. Don't start a "me too" business. Rather, do your own research, find your own niche and cash in on the opportunities.

Actually, you COULD clear $20 per on each cartridge, and to make that much in a year, you would only have to sell about 19 a day. And there ARE upsells and cross sells that could make you hundreds.

  Yep! big business is made selling ink cartridges a guy near me runs an ink cartridge business selling refills for around £2 each,budget cartidges £5.00 each or originals £8 each.
  
  In fact he has just bought the shop next door and is using that as a store room for his stock!
  
  I personally cannot see the point in paying over the odds for cartridges, mine cost me £1 each and i have never had any problems using the cheap ones!

This just proves there's money to be made in the most unlikely of places. Just have to think outside of the box though now there's probably very few niches that aren't already covered.

It's no secret that printer companies make their
money from the ink you buy and not the printer
itself. The printer is just a loss leader. I can get a
laser printer for $79 but the cartridge cost $70!

I refill/repair my own laser cartridges so they
last me until the drums cry out for mercy.
So I'm not surprised how lucrative that
business could be. I was just surprised that
a "school teacher" could get such success
without the usual IM credentials. That's
encouraging for sure.

  Aye! Things are bad when I would rather (impact on landfills aside) spend $29 on a new cheapo printer every now and then, then to keep buying the ink for $30.

Simply ingenious ! But yes the fact is that Ink cartridges have always been overpriced (that is how those companies make their money and not by selling printers). So since this is a recurring cost, I am not surprised that someone could make so much money selling cartridges..
