Does posting viral/funny content get you more friends on facebook?

Facebook is the only social media nut that I'm having problems cracking.
To me, I see 2 ways to utilize facebook (aside from PPC)

You can post casual, yet informative content on your niche.
Or you can post crazy/funny content that everyone will like.

But posting funny content about my niche... doesn't seem possible. I can't think of 1 funny thing to write/post about home improvement. So instead, I just try to post helpful information.

Well I've gotten a couple leads off facebook, but for the most part I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing.

Is the better plan, to just post outrageous content that people will share? Even if it has nothing to do with your niche?

I'm not understanding the more intricate social dynamics of facebook. If I post something thats both original and funny, and people share it, will that actually trigger people to add me as a friend?

Right now I have like 200 friends, most from highschool and college. Then there are tons of people I can add, that I know, but I don't like adding friends. It takes forever. Plus I feel like there's got to be a better way.

I sound ignorant to facebook because I am. I set up a profile there 3 years ago, but barely used it. Mostly because I didn't like facebook. Untill I got into marketing and realized I need to learn how to use it effectively.

So should I just forget about posting useful content for now? Would it be better to just focus on entertaining people & getting attention? Then if I get a lot of people befriending me, I'm thinking I can save promotion for later.

Good idea or no?

Thanks WF - Red

You could ask people to share thier home improvement stories on your page. That might be something that gets likes. It depends. Are you looking to post public things on your personal profile to get more friends for yourself? Or are you promoting a page you created for your company? I think if you put off the wall things up there it would get some attention, but might not get sales for you.

Well thats a good question. It just seems easier to focus on my profile rather than our fanpage. As getting friends seems 1000xs easier than getting people to join a fanpage.

I'm thinking if I can get a lot of friends on my profile, then I can just remind people a couple times a week that we do home improvement (with a video or something). Then 4-5 days a week I can post funny updates so people get use to reading what I post.

I know its important to have targeted users... but its so hard with home improvement. So I think the better plan would be lots of friends, than just make them notice and like us with funny updates. Then a couple times a week, month after month, I can just remind them about home improvement. I say this because the couple of leads we already got, we weren't even marketing for at the time. I literally just made a humorous post on facebook, then 2 of my distant friends contacted me for home improvement services. Problem is I don't have that many friends on my profile, so if I had more, maybe we'd get more leads off facebook.
