GOOGLE PLUS AND THE REL=AUTHOR LINK

Google lovers look at Google+ as the best thing next to sliced bread. Other people think that it is not as useful for marketing. Whether a person likes it or not, Google+ cannot be disregarded for SEO. Content producers have to consider 2 features of the network.

1. Google+ content gets ranked and indexed. As a matter of fact, publishing a unique content on the network not only gets it ranked and indexed, it is also given priority positioning in customized SERPs. Videos and images stored in Google or linked with personal pages on Google+ are also given greater exposure during searches.
2. The rel=author link relates a webpage with an author's profile on Google+ and is becoming a big deal among content creators. Author rank is now being created at an alarming rate because searchers sometimes opt to search for content made by a particular writer. Sometimes, people want results ordered according to the expertise of the writers.

What to do? Content creators, grab this chance and create your own Google+ profile and use the rel=author link in your content.

Already got it, already using it to help sell my services.

It has quite a few bonuses, as it fixes the unique content flag with the original author, so the content cannot be stolen. And when AuthorRank is added in to the search algorithm, writers with a good AuthoRank are going to be charging a premium, I know I will be.

Yep, it's a soft puppy sell for me at the moment.

What I really love though, is that AuthorRank will be socially driven. You can't just dump tons of content with your author link on the web and raise it. You need to be "voted" as a good author via social indicators.

      I love it!

NOTE: It's a bit quirky right now, pages come and go, but it's new and I am sure G will solve the problems.

I love it as well! Have you checked your author stats in Google webmaster tools? It's under the "labs" tab in the sidebar. Very detailed stats for your content. Impressions, clicks, conversions, average placement (of course, they don't tell you what keyword this is for however).

        Super cool!

Yep, its great, and its bound to get better by the time its all fully function and integrated into SERP properly.

I've actually been asking old clients to add the rel=author link to old content in the last couple of days. Although I think it will take a long time for those to turn up, some of this stuff is years old. Everything new I have posted in the last 2 weeks though has been visible in minutes. I usually don't ask for a by line with my work, I'm a hired gun, I work for cash not fame, but I've changed my view on that now.

And my project proposals have been converting incredibly well, I usually run at about a 20% acceptance rate on cold contact clients, it's been more like 80% in the last week. Including some juicy B2B stuff, which is always nice.

This is all due to authorship markup as well?

I'm selling it like its the last liter of water in the desert in my proposals. I even have a PDF I attach demonstrating it, and pushing the fact that it a) safeguards from content theft and b) will add to SERP when Google enable that part. Add to that the screenshot that's included in the PDF of the only search result on the page with an image next to it and they can't sign on the dotted line quick enough.

Giving away my secrets here, but never mind

Sounds like a no brainer if you're writing content regularly. I assume you need to keep your Google+ profile updated in this case right. Or at least make it presentable. That's my first step.

Yeah there are some rules about how your Google+ profile needs to be set up, and you have to register the sites you contribute too, but once you have done it a couple of times its not too complicated. I did it the hard way for one site, with the whole triple entry content -> author page -> Google+ setup.

Then I got a client to try just pasting in an HTML link at the bottom of a page, and added the site as one I contribute too and that worked first time, so much easier.
