Tracking Visitors

Hi all,

I have a site which I want to rack visitors where they are from, what they did whilst on my site, and where they went after. What is the best tool to do this?

    Depending on if you want a free solution or not Google Analytics is a good free choice. For paid choices I've heard lots of good reports on Visual Website Optimizer.

    I think there is no need to pay for the tools, Google Analytics do the job wonderfully all you need to do is to setting up some custom variables and you are good to go

      Just set up a Google Analytics account and added Google Analyticator plugin, which custom variables would you recommend setting up for best results?

    I also vote for Google Analytics. However, another option (which is free for one site, but paid otherwise) is Web Analytics in Real Time | Clicky

    you can get creative and create multiple accounts where you can track different squeeze pages to see what message is working best.

    As mentioned by a lot above -- free choice, go for Google Analytics. If you are after some paid ones, I'd recommend Web Analytics in Real Time | Clicky, as well as CrazyEgg.

    Getclicky gives you the ability to see real time visitors, and CrazyEgg gives you heatmap where you mentioned that:
    what they did whilst on my site, and where they went after.
    and their heatmap gives you an idea of where did most of your visitors click on your website, etc.

    Google Analytics is the best free tool to keep track of your website. Clicky is pretty good but it cannot track website that have more than 1mil visits per day, but hey, the hell can you get 1 mil visit a day.

    Hi Andy.

    If you're just getting started with web analytics then Google Analytics is very likely the optimal tool for you.

    It's free, it's (relatively) simple to use and there are plenty of ressources on internet where you can find guidance on how to make most use of Google Analytics for improving your online business.

    So go ahead, install Google Analytics and pick some of the basic Google Analytics dashboards from http://www.dashboardjunkie.com, then you are off to a good start
