Has anyone used 1&1 for domain purchases?

I saw that they had very cheap .info domains, and I'm wondering if others had used this service to buy domains??

I've used 1and1 for a number of domain purchases. Primarily because they offer free privacy.

The downside is they take FOREVER to register a domain. It's not real time like a normal registar. They batch order and you can sit there without the domain being finalized for quite some time. They take just as long to change nameserver information.

I used 1and1 way back when I started, and I'll never use them again. Thieves and liars that's what they are. Long story, but if I could choose, I'd never buy a domain from them not even if I could them for free.

I had a bad experience involving their hosting recently.

I'm not sure but does this thread violate a "specific person or company" rule?

Also used them years ago when I started. I tried to stop several domain names renewing by phoning them, through their online system and by email. Thought that would be enough. It wasn't, they still took the money anyway and didn't refund it even though it was their error.

Avoid them. I recommend you go with Namecheap for domain names and Hostgator or Bluehost for hosting.

I have about 50 domains still with them but haven't registered one with them for about 10 years and I don't use them any more as they tend to be less flexible than most providers and I lost some a while ago when I tried to cancel one of my domains and they shut the whole account and someone registered a couple of my domains while I couldn't access the admin to renew them and I lost them, so never again for 1&1.

Yeah, I used them sometime back in the day. I believe I bought around 4 domains for $1.00 a piece and they never had down time. So from my experience, they are a good service to use. NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-, 1And1, and Namecheap are the top 3 domain providers.

I can't recommend them either. I still have a few domains there mostly because its a PITA to move, especially if you sell the domain, or at least that's been my experience. I basically use name heap for domains and host gator and a local data center for my hosting.
Have to say i've been very happy with Namecheap's customer service - 1&1 support has always been a joke and less than useful.

Thanks everybody for the head's up. I was thinking of mostly just getting the $1 .info domains for domain direct / domain forwarding if I was selling something on clickbank and wanted it to appear as though it was going to a domain. But, that's ok, I'll spend the $4 bucks at name cheap and be confident I'm buying from folks I've bought from before and had great service. Appreciate it.

I have not used them myself but I have heard many things about their services. None of them positive aside from the fact that they sell domains sometimes cheap as dirt.

By the way, if you are looking for a domain re-direct for Clickbank, it is recommended to use a .com instead of a .info. Just spend the extra $5.

I have about 35 domains there and the one problem I had turned out to be my own fault. The 1&1 customer service is a bit slow but they have free privacy for domains so I've kept those domains there for years.

I tried to stop several domain names renewing by phoning them, through their online system and by email. Thought that would be enough.
That's unfair - all domain registrations there are auto renew. The site tells you that as does the confirmation email. There is info on how to cancel a domain or how to let it expire...but YOU have to manage the domain. I've never had a problem canceling a domain going through the right page on the site. Only takes a couple minutes to do it.

I do agree it's not the most flexble registration site to use if you buy/sell domains but you can find horror stories about any registrar or service online.

thanks once again for your additonal replies. I've had good experiences with namecheap, so I'll continue to work with them. I just thought that things were VERY cheap at 1&1 and I figured, maybe there's a catch to all of this...

I used them and had a terrible experience with their customer service. I tried to cancel a product and they billed me two years after I thought I had cancelled. I tried to get my money back but in the end I felt it wasn´t worth the energy to argue with these guys. Never again!

I started out using 1and1 and I have about 20 domains registered there. All was fine and dandy until I started selling websites, and I learned what a painful transfer process it is - you can't just "push" it to someone instantaneously...it takes 2 days! They also take forever to update their nameservers and there site moves pretty slowly. Don't even get me started on what it is like to host a website with them, lol.

My choice for domains is NameCheap.com. They are not the cheapest, but it is so nice and easy to push the domain to someone else.

    Go to instantdomainsearch.com
    Choose your domain
Buy from NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO- through the above website. A default promo is applied and a .com costs $8 and if you buy the .com then the .info is available for another 20 cents extra.

    Get 1and1 for a website ......... seriously.

I sold a site and it's been a SERIOUS PAIN to even deal with it on their services. Ridiculous energy wasted for no reason. They make you go through unrealistic measures to get off their services including sending pictures of ID.... whoever you're sending the site to, needs to sign a contract........ and this is no joke, no exaggeration.

    Just........Dont......... Do.... It

I have probably around 15 domains with 1and1. The downside to 1and1 is that their hosting doesn't have cPanel and is kinda harder than necessary to work with. I point the domains to my hosting with HostGator.

While I haven't had any issues with using them as a registrar, I'll agree that they're slow. It can take up to 48 hours to direct a site to new hosting and there's a few steps your have to go through (unlock, new host info, etc) to get the process rolling.

I sold a site that was registered at 1and1 about two weeks ago. I received an email that said the domain was being transferred and I had to give the "okay." Other than that, it was seamless and surprisingly quick.
