Give me a niche for a newbie......ANSWERED!!!!

Ok so lately i realised that not only me but a lot of people out there are struggling to choose what niche they should get into. And the answer i heard many time was "To go something you are passionate about". And fair enough you want to get into something you know a lot about and enjoy it, but some people have passions which you cant really build a business with.

And while surfing WarriorForum i finally found the right answer to this question which should help a lot of people out there.

It's not about your passion. Passion is something you want to do with your life. Let me say that again:

Passion is something you want to do with your life.

Making money is not something you want to do with your life. Making money is something you want to do so that you can afford to explore everything that life has to offer.

Building a business is not about monetizing your passion. (Trust me, I had a long thread last week all about finding your passion.) If you want to piddle around and get stuck with everyone else who's not making any money, keep looking for your passion.

My first business was in cell phones. I worked in them for 10 years and made hundreds of thousands of dollars selling cell phones and cell phone accessories in the real world, not online. Was I passionate about them? NO! They're plastic and silicon (like a Kardashian)...nothing to get passionate about. I made money because I was good at quickly analyzing a person's needs and then solving their problem with a cellular solution.

My next (and current) business is article writing. Am I passionate about writing SEO'd articles on dog fences and diabetic medications? Yeah, right. Guess what, though? I'm excellent at researching and then writing the facts my clients want to see in a readable form. I'm also excellent at finding a staff of other writers who can do the same thing and appeal to different clients.

Nowhere in there did any of that touch on things that I'm passionate about.

I'm passionate about moving somewhere that I can watch the sun rise over the ocean every morning. I'm passionate about finding one single woman that I can love for the rest of my life. I'm passionate about traveling through the Far East and seeing things I've never seen before.

I'm not passionate about making money.

See the difference? Find something you're good at that solves a common problem and then make money at it. If you can't figure out how to make money at it, research it by looking at advertisements of people doing the same thing. If there are no advertisements, then people aren't looking for it and you should look for another problem to solve.

          At a certain point, you just have to realize that most of us don't have a clue and we stumble into something good, like I did with cell phones a decade ago. There's no passion involved in it for a lot of people, but if you find something you're good at, you can become passionate about it.

          Do you know the real reason I kept selling cell phone parts for almost 10 years? It was that time when the 58 year old man came up, after he'd been to the Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile stores looking for a charger for a phone he'd bought 8 months ago, and they all tried to sell him a new phone because they didn't make the charger any longer. I'd reach behind me without even looking, grab the charger, and sell it to him for $20. He'd smile and shake my hand and I instantly felt useful.

          Or maybe it was when that 30 year old mother brought her little 7 year old daughter to my kiosk. She'd just paid too much money and gotten her kid a cell phone as a reward for a good report card. I'd come around the booth and talk to them, and then take them to the faceplates for her phone and let her pick one out, and then I'd put it on her phone while she watched. When it was done, the look on her little face at seeing her new phone tricked out with the coolest faceplate (to her) was priceless.

          It's little moments like those that kept me in business for so long. When you find something that you're good at, and I mean truly good at, having someone smile at you or thank you for what you did, even though it was nothing special to you, will keep you going for another day or two. That's when you know you're in the right place.

          I like a lot of what J says, but I don't agree with this. I'm not just here to disagree, I just want to tell you what it's like for me.

          Before I do, I'd just like to say that you can find something to be passionate about. Most people probably haven't tried looking hard enough. I've heard of someone turning a blog about space into a $20K per month business, and another who makes a full-time income from scrapbooking.

          Anyway, I do work as a writer and this is just what I do in my spare time:

          When I'm not writing I'm playing around in my niche and trying to experiment with new things. Find new ways of doing things and making other things better. I spend hours on my niche per day and I love it.

          How much does that relate to business? None, it's just me playing around with my passion. The part that does relate to my business is when I write a post every week. When I increase my marketing efforts more that will also be business.

          So I spend about 90% of my time just working on my passion. That's compared to someone who spends about 90% of their time working on their business because they aren't passionate about it. They just research stuff and write about it.

          So most of my day is playing with my passion, not working on my business. Now I'm under no illusions that if I'm to turn it into a full-time business I'll have to spend more time on the business aspect, but I make money at the moment from basically having fun.

          I think of business/blogging as a game, so I guess I love the business side of it too. I don't think of it as making money, I think of it as increasing conversions/helping more people, etc.

          I'd recommend anyone at least try and find something they're passionate about, because when I write about my passion it doesn't feel like work. Not 1%; it feels like sharing my ideas with the world and helping people change their lives.

            I like your post and the way you look at it, but for me whenever i try to make money from something am passionate about, i just cant because i treat as my passion/hobby. However as soon as i move and start treating it like a business it all works out better and after that am able to spend some time on my passions and hobbies etc.

              There's thousands of ways you can run a business. The only thing that matters is whether you can get out of bed for it every day. I know my way won't work with everyone, but maybe a few.

              I think the way I described is much harder to get going, but a little more fun if it does. I don't mind putting in a few years hard work to make sure it happens. But I make a living writing just now so I'm not really in a rush.

        Jason, you have put that SO well, they should make it a sticky... I'm also passionate about a good couple of things, that didn't make much money... However, I'm also good at solving other people's problems, and that's how I've made money in my life. Internet Marketing is just a different medium for doing the same thing.

        Also, thanks Jacob for posting this, I would have probably never come across it otherwise.
