Need advice on reaching mommy bloggers

Hi all,

My company has an idea for a new product geared towards young kids. They are clothes hangers shaped like monkeys and come in 7 different colors. We have the product prototype and it's very well made - each hanger weighs about 3.5 ounces, feels pretty heavy and not cheap at all.

We have made a promo video and a one-page website for the product:

rainbowmonkey.net (can't post live links yet)

We will be adding the product to Kickstarter in a few weeks. Before that I think we should generate some "buzz", since the Kickstarter campaign only lasts 30 days. I thought the best idea would be to contact mommy bloggers since the product is for kids. What is the most efficient way I can accomplish something like this in a very short amount of time? I think I have 3 options:

- doing it all manually
- use a scraper (would be impersonal and yield a lower response rate)
- outsource someone to do it

What's the best idea and are there other ideas?

Also, once I find these mommy bloggers, how do I know what their readership is and their traffic levels are? I'll be offering them a set of the rainbow monkeys in exchange for writing a post about us if the project goes through on Kickstarter. Is this good enough?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Your best bet is to research where your potential buyers are surfing, check out the website, see if they will accept a banner or text link ad to your site and start converting those visitors into buyers.

You can make banners at 20 dollar banners .com (Google it) and contact the webmasters and cut a deal with them for ad space.

I would suggest to target mum forums and see if you can have an email signature link, if not find out how much they charge for banner advertising on their forum.

I think the guest post blogging idea is good, as this is a free option. You just need to find any mums blog.

You can find out how much traffic they are getting from Home | Compete - try to target sites with more than 10,000 uniques if you want to get any real traffic from your campaign. For such sites you'll be looking at about $40 - $60 per month to advertise your banner on, depending on size of your banner.

Thanks all for the great input!

I know it's been a while since I visited, been working hard on this campaign. Just thought I'd send a short update:

I have contacted the owners of all the websites petelta suggested, got 2 responses back so far and they want $30 and $40 respectively for a sponsored post. However I'm unable to see how much traffic they have on compete/quantcast, both say "not enough data to estimate" or something like that. Does this mean they don't have that much traffic?

I'm also trying Pinterest marketing, some YouTube marketing and press releases. I only have 2 optins to report so not much progress yet.

If anyone knows of some high traffic mom bloggers please let me know!

      Thanks

I'm going to throw out a word of caution here... I've just finished having hundreds of mom-bloggers take down badges from a paid linking program a client ran 3 months ago. The owner was warned not to go after this niche, paid thousands for links and then paid thousands to have them all removed after getting slapped around by the Panda and Penguin updates.

Mom-blogs in general seem to have lots of links to lots of places, sometimes involved in dozens of different link exchanges... This could hold you back in the organic optimization realm, vs. help you, so take caution.

A potential solution is to set your product up as a merchant in an affiliate network and then get the mom-bloggers to become your affiliates at 10% - 25% of sales. Some setup fees, but you could turn all the mom bloggers into affiliates who would be publishing affiliate links that point to the network and re-direct to your site while the cookie is planted.

A little protection can go a long way before getting in bed with a bunch of mom-blogs!

        • It's easy to get mom blogs to promote your product.

Unfortunately, young moms don't tend to buy stuff. They're trying to save money and score freebies.

Thus, if you donate some product to a mom blog and the blogger runs a contest, there will be a lot of interest in your product. But only because they're hoping to get it for free.

Prominent mom bloggers deal with the big consumer companies (like Proctor and Gamble) and will want four-figure placement fees.

Trust me on this. I have a lot of experience in this arena.

A better plan would be to raise the money privately for manufacturing, then put the product on Amazon. Get a whole lot of people who already have affiliate sites for kids products to include yours. (It's pretty easy to find affiliate sites -- just search for a top-selling kid product and visit the sites that crop up.) You'll need to have your own site but it doesn't have to be complex; it can be one page.

Why Amazon? It's the top selling site in the U.S. It costs nothing to list products there; you don't pay until you sell something. It is widely indexed.

go to google keyword tool and do research on the keywords in your niche and then go type them into google and contact those sites on the first 2-3 pages.

We have had some success doing this, and got big affiliates sales coming through by them become affiliates for clickbank products. Be smart, and use your wits, there are endless opportunties out there doing this sort of thing.

  • Hi Delilah,

I suggest implementing a Facebook PPC campaign for an exclusive ad for your target local areas and markets. You can configure your Facebook PPC ads to target women in a certain age bracket, most likely with children, based in specific places, a set of related interests (parenting, blogging, etc.) and so on. Though before doing this, you should develop an enticing offer. What'll your ad offer? Here's an idea ---

Tell them in the ad that they can:

    • Fill out an opt-in form to get your product for free (if they're qualified);

    • They get signed up as your affiliates with an irresistible commission-per-sale percentage;

    • They write a post about their experience with your product, and that'd be posted on your site along with their affiliate links which point to your sales pages, and they'll get paid for that post (a fixed one-time price), since you'll be using it on your own site; and

    • Write, about what they wrote above, in their social network or blog or site or in the other online communities they regularly hang out to talk about relevant things (parenting, children, family, etc.), so they can earn commissions per sale income. Also:

You can implement this advertising and marketing campaign in private online groups/communities/networks like Web forums, blog networks, community portals and private membership sites with active readership and mailing list subscriber bases, i.e. Parenting groups with active membership bases consisting of your target customers, and so on. And:

Think about creative ways you can integrate the Christmas season into your ad offers. Now, here are the things you get from doing this:

    • Wider brand name and product exposure across target networks...
    • Unique content for your site...
    • Affiliates who'll promote your products for you, so they can earn commissions per sale (or per lead)...

"Mommy bloggers" tend to hang out at places like Pinterest looking at shoes, baby stuff, jewelry, etc.

You should also try mommy forums or message boards where there are active members, you can even try WAHM.com. They have a vast network of active moms who may be interested in your product, they also have a paid banner ad placement in there, so you can try it out.

    • Got a pitch in the mail today from yet another mommy blogger. She referred me to her testimonials page, which is actually rather telling. It has comments like:

My business partner just called and said it looked amazing and we've already gotten a bunch of FB likes! Thank you so much!!

Wow, What a turn out for the giveaway!!

Already noticed a bunch of new FB likes that look like they came from your giveaway - so thanks!

We ended up getting quite a bit of Facebook likes and Twitter followers + drive traffic to our sites as a direct result of your review.

Notice what's missing? No one says anything about making sales.

If you want a few extra Facebook likes and a temporary small traffic spike, go with a mommy blogger.

If you want to sell product, go with an ecommerce venue.

It really is just that simple.
