To Blog or Not To Blog

Quick question to get your opinions. My company does IM,Web Design, SEO and the like. Our website doesn't have a blog on it but we are starting one. The main focus of the blog will be the above mentioned areas of interest. Some of the topics of the blog will be exact info that we charge for - maybe not giving all the goods away - small services with the hopes of up-selling or interesting the reader enough to sign on with our services.

My question is - should we dedicate another domain to the blog or host it on the company's website. We own the .net version of our .com.

My thought is to run the blog on the .net and link over to the company's website for services with the hopes of interesting readers enough to become clients.

What are your thoughts?

I would suggest doing it on your company's website that way you are gaining more targeted traffic to one site. If you start a blog I do suggest that you don't just write about your website and provide some informative content.

The blog wont simply be a sales tool. It will include informative posts as well as tips and techniques.

Blog is a good way to provide comfort to your client that you know your sshitt. I found it very useful in various ventures I have been part of.

    I would start the blog.

Promote other areas of your site via your blog.

If you are posting irregularly, get a plug in to remove the date from each post.

Blogging is a great way of getting backlinks and improvising on the incoming traffic to the website. You can setup an internal blog for your website and add posts on a regular basis, bookmark these posts. If the posts are informative and provide value to the people, you will surely see improvement in the incoming traffic. You can also set up a free blog through the WordPress platform.

I suggest using domain.com/blog because this way you can attract more visitors to your website. I've seen some pretty big companies do that.

It is a good idea to use a blog as the central hub of your business, not only can you use it to convey what you do it also allows you to add quality content on a regular basis. This means your site gets indexed more often and you will rank better if you pick great keywords. You can do other things with your content to provide more exposure, links and networking for your business as well as connect your social media to your business.

    Just a thought..

Sounds like you have made your mind up on the question of whether or not is is nobler, in the mind, to take up arms against a sea of troubles ... ah, forgive me .... such beautiful words .. but I digress.

The main focus of the blog will be the above mentioned areas of interest. Some of the topics of the blog will be exact info that we charge for - maybe not giving all the goods away - small services with the hopes of up-selling or interesting the reader enough to sign on with our services.
Good luck with this approach; it can work if your free stuff is good and leaves people wanting more.

My question is - should we dedicate another domain to the blog or host it on the company's website. We own the .net version of our .com.
There's no right or wrong answer to this. Personally, I would run it on the same domain.

    Good luck with it.

Actually blog is very essential to your company site especially when you are offering different services. Blogs can help your clients feel comfortable with you because blogs can cover different thing like tip, techniques, method and even procedures. It will be easy for you to optimize your site if you have blogs.

If you're in the stage of confusion on where to set up your blog.
I would suggest to have it in your company site.

    Hope it helps.

Thanks for the replies so far. The initial thought and plan was to use the .com for the blog just wanted to see if it made sense to keep it separate from the main business site. It seems that most are in agreement the .com would be the best location.

There's no logic, there: visitors are no more or less likely to click from the blog on the .net to the main site on the .com than they are to click from the blog on the .com to the main site also on the .com. It's all "clicking on a link". Most of them won't even notice the domain extension-change, but it wouldn't make any difference if they did.

      Why?

True, but all of that clearly applies equally if it's on the the same .com domain as the main site.

I can see no advantage or reason to keeping it separate from the main site, and even those who've so far posted above suggesting that course seem unable to offer one, don't they?

For myself, I'd add the blog to the main, .com site (albeit not for exactly the reasons some have suggested above).

Both large and small companies alike are increasingly finding, these days, that it seems advantageous to add blogs to their sites.

      Good luck!

Having a blog and not just a website, is a great way to interact with an audience. The people will think you are interested in what they have to say and this promotes good communication. I have to say it's a great idea to blog.

Same company domain definitely. Anyone landing on a separate blog may not bother visiting your main site and vice versa.

      Good luck with it all.

Even myself too think that it should be present as an option in your own website only, because if you take up another domain for it this hardly works. The bloggers hardly bother to take up interest to go to the main website unless nothing important is present in the blog. If you are planning to take up another domain for the blog then a small tip from my side would be just keep the content very limited and give a link to your main website for more details. I see this trick for many blogs, in which I am forced to visit the main site to gather some knowledge in order to write something relevant.

I would definitly make a blog on your website. You can make a subdomain, or do something like www.yourwebsite.com/blog.

Blog will bring you returning visitors, and more engagement, and will be better for your SEO.
