      Thanks, Adie. Food for thought.

I'd also be grateful for any ideas around classified type ads or where to advertise on larger websites.

Craigslist is the place I would start. Then build a site offering your services. Don't overlook your local newspapers classified ads. People read them.

Find the closest college campus to you, and put up some flyers. Quick and easy money if your stuff actually proves to be valuable.

I ran a resume writing service for several years. Suzanne and Joe both gave you good ideas. Craigslist and local colleges are both great places to advertise.

Another idea is to offer to do a free class on resume writing for your local library or at local churches. Hand out your business cards to everyone who attends. Even when you've gone over all the basics of writing a good resume there will still be some people who prefer to have you do it for them. Send a press release to your local paper about the classes.

You can also contact local businesses who are laying people off. They are often willing to pay you to help their employees locate new jobs.

I wouldn't give it too much thought. People here are here because they want to work for themselves ....

I had a resume/cover letter service during the last recession and it was lucrative. I studied winning resumes and cover letters before I developed my style through books at a book store and they were great resumes and cover letters and landed quite a few real jobs.

All of my clients came from local advertising, not the Internet. I didn't even have Internet access at the time. I advertised in a few local papers in their classifieds, left my business card where ever business cards could be left, put flyers up at the local college, put ads in the grocery stores on their bulletin boards ... etc.

Personally, I don't see the point of advertising a resume service as a WSO. But that's just me.

However, a product on "How to Start and Run an Online Resume Service" might work.

Higgey, you might want to visit the offline part of this forum since some of the business in this industry is local.

IDK Rose...a lot of Warriors probably end up slinking back into the job market after they fail with this :p. Of course, they're probably too bitter to buy from someone in the IM market, so you're probably right.

I see a lot of projects buyers looking for resume writers on freelance sites.

You could also consider becoming a resume writer for one of the larger firms who already offer this service. This way you don't have the marketing overhead.

You might want to try and get a joint venture going with some of the vendors at clickbank who sell cover letter and resume related products. They will have thousands of buyers on their list who have already paid for cover letter tips etc....

On their download page they could link to your service etc....

Can't get any more targeted buyers than this although I don't know if they will agree to JV of course.

    Here is an example product

You haven't even given enough information for anyone to answer you properly.

What kind of service are you offering? Will YOU be writing the resumes or are you an affiliate for a service?

You say you want to offer the service in the USA and UK! Very different places. We don't call them resumes in the UK for a start.

I used to write CVs as part of my service when I first became self employed 17 years ago. It isn't easy and it isn't something you can do in a few minutes. I insisted on meeting my clients face to face and interviewing them properly.

I had clients from school leavers to senior management in major companies. Which do you think would be the longer CV/resume and why? Think about it. The answer to that is important.

An effective resume cannot be written just using the content someone has sent you from a previous resume or the information they send you in an email. If you think it can then you will be failing your clients.

You need to research what prospective employers want to know, how they want resumes to be laid out. That might be very different in the different countries. I don't know, I only worked with local, UK clients.

How I got my clients? Built relationships with local employment agencies. I even wrote their own staff's CVs. Advertised in local shops, local hospitals (I had several nurses as clients), local large companies.

I agree with the newspaper ad idea. In 1985 I ran a resume writing service in a medium sized city in the Deep South during the oil bust. I ran a quarter page ad in the local newspaper and most days I had to literally push my way into my office because there were so many customers at nine in the morning. People wanting resumes seem to want to talk about their work lives to another person face to face. The ad cost me a pretty penny every month, but it generated an overwhelming response. It paid for itself from the first day it appeared in the newspaper. I think you will do quite well by investing in a newspaper ad in addition to all of the free advertising opportunities on the Internet. In fact, I think your biggest problem will be more work than you will be able to handle by yourself.

Both of these are spot on. You're thinking of this as an Internet business. My customers wanted and needed to see me face to face so I could ask questions and draw information from them to build the best possible resume for them. Many of them had skills they didn't even think about using in a resume. Many of them needed customized cover letters to go out with their resumes on a weekly basis which was more income from a customer. I don't see a lot of people using an online resume service if they have access to a local resume writer. I could be wrong, but writing a good resume starts with a good interview of the customer.

use newspapers classified and test your copy and see which gets the better results.

Also I know a guy that uses social media for this, and laser targted ads and does well. As he is collecting leads. That is another option.

Some great ideas above mine - just a couple of things that I would like to add.

Everyone knows someone who has lost or is about to lose their job - many post about this via social media - advertise using your local circle of friends offline (tell everyone you know), and post an offering on your facebook page or tweeter, google+ or whatever you like.

Get in touch with the following professionals:
Employment Attorneys/Workers Comp Attorneys - why? because they represent folks that have lost, are about to lose, or are fed up with their jobs and have been wronged, whether it is age discrimination, pregnancy discrimination, gender, etc. The attorneys are of course trying to help their clients and would like to gain a recovery for them, but the litigation process takes a long time (usually upwards of two years) to conclude, and in some cases much longer; tell the attorney that you offer a resume writing service for a reduced fee to their clients. This should work quite well as it costs the attorneys nothing to promote you and it gives them a way to help their clients get back on their feet.
Physical Therapists/Chiropractors - folks who go to see the above allied health practitioners due so for a variety of reasons - some due to employment related difficulties, personal injuries, some of which may have been sustained at work. For the same reasons that you will be meeting with employment attorneys, you will do same with the above professionals.

    Your Local Chamber of Commerce
Now remember, this is a lot like a local offline version of LinkedIn - there is nothing like networking - get a list of the local Chamber's directory of businesses, call up some of the businesses and offer to cross promote each other's services.

All the other good advice I wanted to give you has been given by the above warriors - good luck and be blessed.

    Warmest Regards,

    - John Tzor

If you have no idea how to write a resume then you are, quite simply, a scammer if you are running a resume service.

It isn't a "money making" idea, it's people's lives and futures that you are pissing on. Would you want to apply for a job using a crap resume produced by some idiot who didn't know what the **** they were doing?

Sorry, this thread is making me angry now.

This exactly. Writing a selling resume for people is not just a list of their past jobs in chronological order and not just a list of their education. It is a sales letter and if you are not an excellent writer and not skilled at presenting this information in a way that will sell the job candidate to a potential employer, then you have no business in that business.

Resume writing is not a make money online business. I bought no less than 10 books on writing resumes before I started doing it for customers. Educate yourself on it if you're serious about writing resumes. People need jobs. Don't add insult to injury by scamming them with a crap resume service.

It honestly depends how you price yourself. At fiverr at $5 per resume you will get loads of orders from customers who don't value you and make you work 12 hours a day to earn $50 a day.

If you market yourself through cold calling, offline or other means you may even get $250-500+ for a basic resume which may not even be a day's work if you are lucky.

Agree with the others, don't waste time offering a Resume writing service in the WSO section. The fact that people register here and have found the warrior forum suggests that they will be able to write their own resume if required. Of course you may write a better one but it's a hard sale I think to this group of people looking for ideas in mostly self employment.

Another angle, target the content network in PPC networks and only select jobs websites that offer ad placements.

And here is an offline method but you really need to live in a decent size city to get a lot of leads.

Stand outside or close to every job agency office or employment center, almost every person going in and out is looking for the job. Tell them you can help them get a job with your resume writing service and hand out a business card with a leads page opt in for more information. Don't try and sell your service on the spot, chances are most people will already have a resume , but are they getting interviews ?

I assume your work is good but if they still can't get a job once you have their opt in details you can recommend a few ethical affiliate offers that may help them start working online, you may even help them get a domain and web hosting sorted etc....

But only offer a good service either way, treat them well.

Many years ago I bought a report with a similar method targeting casinos where you would stand outside the casino and hand out CD's with free poker sign up offers etc... Back then people were curious enough to put the CD into their computer and check it out.

Bottom line, go where the job seekers crowd hang out.

When I let rip in post #37, it wasn't aimed at you, but at another poster, whose original post seems to have gone but is quoted in my post. He (or she) didn't seem to know how write a resume.

Thanks for clarifying that you do, indeed, understand what you are taking on.

You could probably offer potential customers a price that includes a 1 hour interview via Skype (for example) as part of the package.

Hello everyone, just signed up to post here.

Apologies, I know this is a year old thread but it is quite relevant to the questions I would like help with.

Me and a few colleagues of mine are setting up a CV/Cover letter editing service primarily aimed at young people/students. We already have a website and have had a few customers, but we were wondering what the best way to advertise the service would be.

We already thought of putting up posters/flyers in colleges and universities, which we are in the process of doing, but we did not consider newspaper ads or classifieds that I've seen mentioned here. I suppose I didn't consider this because young people are less likely to read classified ads, perhaps we should diversify?

Being in London, would you consider posters, flyers, maybe a few newspaper ads and twitter/facebook activity to be sufficient advertisement to drive a good stream of customers to our site?

We charge £8.99 for a single CV or Cover letter editing package which includes help with interviews and job seeking.

          Here is the website http://www.cvupgrade.com/

We have only been running about a week so excuse and mistakes as we haven't had time to properly proof read (we didn't think anyone would see it until we started advertising properly). Would you say the style and appearance of the website is good or not?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Always good to see a 2 year old and even a one year old thread get bumped up because of new and current information.

Not always so good to see it bumped because the bumper has something to sell related to the OP.

It's like seeing all those affiliate links posted by WF members of 7 years, they know better, but, what the hey, now is the time to get away with these shenanigans, eh?

The RESUME has changed, today's job seeker has more tools and the resume is (as of Sept. 2014) a somewhat bigger business card. The only purpose is to keep one out of a toss in file pile...to a pile of MAYBE Interview this person.
