Facebook's "Bait n Switch"

So you own a small business, and you're trying to acquire more customers. Being that Facebook has 1 billion users, you decide to start a Facebook campaign.

You build a nice Facebook page for your business, you start marketing your Facebook page to your customers and you even start generating a lot of likes from your customers and potential customers.

Seems like a win right?

Wrong!

Introducing Edgerank and Promoted Posts! That's right, your Facebook updates are only visible to a small percentage of your fans (you know, those who have opted in to receive updates from your business).

How do you reach all of your fans you ask? You need to PAY Facebook! It's obvious why many small business owners feel that Facebook has pulled a "bait and switch".

This is why you need to be building a real customer database, by collecting their email address or cell phone #. Of course, the best way to do this is to offer a special deal for customers that add their contact info to your database.

Mobile is especially important considering the state of email marketing and as shown in this survey, mobile users actually WANT you to send them special offers via smartphone.

In short, yes you should create a Facebook page for your business, but do NOT spend a lot of time and money building up your "likes". I recommend connecting with customers using Twitter or Google+ instead. At least with Google+ your search rankings should increase as you become more active. The same can NOT be said with Facebook.

So what is a Facebook fan really worth? Watch the video to gain more insight on this matter.

True, and thanks for the more in-depth insights and suggestions. Email lists seem to be the most valuable medium to contact your market and probably will be for a few years to come.

My pleasure! Yea, email marketing isn't going anywhere, but you definitely want to incorporate mobile. I'm trying to figure out the best way to implement Aweber's new "Call Loop" sms text messaging and voice messaging feature.

Anybody out there in Warrior land that has used Aweber's new Call Loop, please chime in!

I do not see the bait and switch part. I am pretty sure there are many people on here who miss postings because they have so much traffic on their feed. That is where this percentage number comes from. You make a post at 8am, but the time your subscriber views their facebook page at 7pm, your information has been buried. Now Facebook offers a way to make sure your information shows up on top of that feed so everybody can view it and this is bait and switch?

You can still post the same way you have as you have in the past for free. Just like any other form of marketing, it is a numbers game.

That's not what Edgerank is. It's not a matter of your posts just falling down in the feed stream, it's a matter of them not showing up AT ALL for the majority of your fans.

There are a lot of businesses that would not have spent as much time and money acquiring "likes" if they knew that just down the road they'd only be able to reach a small percentage of them, unless they pay Facebook.

    Yeah I agree man.

Facebook has a lot of people a little ticked off by this new update. But I do believe it will also open up new opportunities to reach more and new people in a different way.

It's kinda like a thread bump like we have here on the warrior forum.

As for the value of a fan, I've never really gave them much. I always get the email address.

For sure! It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.

I agree with what Matthew says here, you see you don't own Facebook so if there is a problem all of a sudden or your page gets taken down then thats it, its gone however if you have the email addresses of those "fans" then you have something that you own and if Facebook was to disappear tomorrow you can still email those "fans"

This is the second post I've seen about facebook not being viable. Suggesting that small businesses invest more time into Twitter or even Google+ is bad advice in my opinion.

I'm not saying you shouldn't maintain a Facebook presence. I'm just personally not going to invest too much time in acquiring likes. That's all.

I've always wondered how many 'Likes' on a business' fan page actually converts to real sales.

I'm not sure if people are tracking their traffic from FB enough to find a Like to Sales ratio - that would be an interesting metric to see.

If you have that metric, and it's good, spending a few bucks to 'bump up' your post wouldn't be a bad investment.

      Sagar,
I have a client that I worked with on a incentized offer for their 'like' (pre this change) and got 67% redemption on the offer to likes. Not enough data yet to see how this changes things.

It IS bait and switch, but probably not something you could sue for. I could probably list hundreds of similar things.

Can't everyone that "follows" you, or goes to your page, see the stuff though? Mst "likes" often don't mean anything. It doesn't mean they want to be your pals.

imho. FB fanpage is more for interacting with your fans and directing them to your website. But if your fans cannot see your posts, then yeah,, that really sucks~ geez~ pardon me.. because I have a fanpage and it frustrates me when my posts cannot reach out to my fans~

I mean, I'm not saying that I won't maintain a presence still on Facebook, and I do have a like box still on my blog, but I'm not going to fall for their bullshit and start paying to reach the fans I should already be able to reach.

I thought facebook is the best platform to increase marketing. But now reading this post I understand that twitter & google+ are better than facebook.
