I want some generic pictures I can use on my website. Wouldn't be used for branding, just to liven things up a bit. When I go to sites like Yahoo! Flickr or Photobucket most of the images say 'image subject to copyright'. Doesn't this mean I can't use them without permission?

Be VERY careful where you get them from. Many places share images without making it clear what the correct permissions are and image copyright holders are particular active in pursuing people using their images without proper permission. Andy |

I second the vote for istockphoto.com. Pay a small fee and sleep at night |

3rd for iStockphoto. At $1 per image, you can't go wrong. And the quality makes a HUGE difference.

Thanks for the info. I signed up with istockphoto but got worried. Everything I brought up cost 10 credits which is about $15 a piece. (That would have shot the budget real quick.) I have found the $1 pictures and they will do just fine. Thanks again WF |

istockphoto the tip is that you only need the 'small ' image size - the 1 credit - not 10 credit download selection.... you also for custom graphics from the stock photo - go to forums digitalpoint and to the contest section - you can get amazing custom graphics llike headers ebook covers done for like $10 to $30 bucks!!! you can see some of the graphics I got done there in my sig links |

It defaults to the $10 image. Just select the "xsmall" row and the price will change accordingly. You do need to buy "credits" first, though. I think they start at $10 for 10 credits. Xsmall images are 1 credit.

I have a forum in which someone asked earlier in the week about istockphoto. I've been there but never used their service. In their license agreement (read it, don't take my word as gold) it says the images can be used on websites and promotional materials, but it also says that their images cannot be used in items intended for resale except where an extended license is obtained. I take this to mean that they cannot be used in ebooks and such products intended for resale. I see you wanted them for your site, which, the way I read it is permitted. You cannot use their images however to create site templates for resale or redistribution without an extended license. Again, read it for yourself. I've used Stock Photography Images at Can Stock Photo many times, which is almost identical to istock, but canstock specifically mentions that use in ebooks is permitted. The images cost 2, 3, or 4 dollars depending on size. A lot of times they have 1/2 price sales too. Good luck! |

iStock is OK. They've been raising their prices steadily ever since they got bought out by Getty. Try Flickr. Specifically, the advanced search feature at: Flickr: Advanced Search Scroll down and select Creative Commons photos. AFAIK with certain CC licensing, you can use the images on commercial projects so long as you credit the photographer. Cheers. |

Yep I agree with the majority vote here. istockphoto is a great resource for low cost photos. You may also want to check-out corbis.com. They have high quality images, although I don't think anything for a dollar. Their rates are reasonable for the smaller images, but that's all you really need.

Istockphoto is good, but I also use BigStockPhoto as well. I browse through both of these sites until I find suitable images/graphics for my site.

I suggest you to go through google images to get a web photo for your website. I think all the photos there are free no fees.

I've found a lot of good stuff on Flickr but can you use it on a website without acknowledgement? I don't want to have to attach a link back to Flickr or someone else's page on each of the images. I want people to stay on my site.

Just a reminder as a couple people have said.... Be VERY careful whom you use. Many sites have taken images from Getty who does NOT watermark their images. Both Getty and Corbis are sending demand letters with VERY LARGE amounts on them ($1000-$1500 PER IMAGE) if they find you using an image they belive is in their library. Regardless of WHERE you get the image, if Getty or Corbis believes they own the image, you might get a nasty demand letter from them. They use a service out of Israel I believe that scans the net for images and compares them to Getty or Corbis image libraries. iStockPhoto is owned by Getty and I would just be careful with them. I realize most people should not have any problem, but just be informed... See more at ExtortionLetterInfo.com - Reporting the Getty Images Settlement Demand Letter Just hoping everyone is aware, not trying to cause problems... K- |
