Did You Get Into Internet Marketing For All The Right Reasons?

I got into internet marketing because it seemed to be a great transition from direct mail. Something that I love and have been doing since 2008.

I transitioned into Internet marketing in 2009 and have enjoyed it as well.

However, something has happened to me in the past year that had me questioning many things.

In both direct mail and internet marketing I have financially done well. I'll admit, in the beginning of my marketing endeavours I did it because I wanted to make money. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Now, I am recently divorced but marketing is something that I love and will always... always... be in my life.

I continue marketing for a different reason now. It seems to be different now than it was in the beginning. Yes, I like to provide a certain lifestyle for myself and my kids. But it is different.

So, my question to you is. How has internet marketing changed for you? Are you still in it for the same reasons when you started? Or has it changed?

For the right reasons? Nah. I stumbled into IM trying to find a way to make money without doing any work. After several months and a couple hundred dollars later, I finally realized that you have to work to make money in anything. I envisioned the IM life as lounging beachside from my vacation home while watching my bank account grow on my laptop.

2 years later, I do IM part-time and do fine by my standards. The reason why I still do this hasn't changed drastically. I still want the freedom to work from home or wherever I have an internet connection. I'm confident with enough focus and dedication (and hard work) I'll get there soon enough.

I was an idiot an fell for every new shiny product, i got into it to make money. It is as blunt as that. However over the years of learning it has become more of a passion, but my primary focus has and always will be to make money to provide the lifestyle that i want for me and the people closest to me.

    Hi Bill,

    It's completely changed for me.

I started in 1997 as a way to create an income I could generate from home so that when my wife and I started a family I could be home with the kids and not stuck commuting in traffic, and with the hope that the income would be enough that my wife would have the choice of whether to work or not.

Unfortunately by the time I got to a full-time income from IM I was divorced with no children.

So I just used it as a way to get rid of the $100k of debt that I had ended up with.

So since my original goals for IM kept changing it's just meant that I've been able to travel the world and see amazing things and created a way to make money doing something I enjoy and that also lets me help others more than I was previously able to.

By the internet marketing, I can reach a lot of potential buyers quicker than the offline ways. And offer products to them. And cut plenty of marketing cost.

Prospect of ecommerce industry of my country is very good for 3 next years along economy growth of my country is high, I must to take slice of the cake for building my own business through the internet marketing.

I got into internet marketing because I wanted to teach people stuff! I am a teacher at heart and I first started by writing an ebook that teaches people how to play the guitar.

Once I learned a lot about IM and how to market stuff online I started teaching those methods and it all grew from there...

I believe I got started for the right reasons most definitely. Whether it's online or offline, a man's gotta make a living and support is family either way!

    Best,
    Shane

I got into it for the same reasons I'm in it now, and will stay in it until "retired": freedom.

Money is merely a means to that end.

We do it because we like the supplemental income it provides and we hope to have it built up well enough to be a good earner when retirement finally comes for my husband in a few years. Our biz is portable, we can run it from anywhere in the country, tho ideally we'd like to be on the beach somewhere warm, filling orders while drinking a cold cerveza!

Good topic...I got into internet marketing to complement what iw as doing offline. If work at it, and plan for the long haul you can do well. The big advantage is that it makes my business much more portable. There's no reason I can't do offline and online the rest of my life.

I initially got into IM because I was running a mobile detailing business (still do part time), and I got sick and tired of having to reschedule customer's because the weather was bad! I was losing money (and my mind) like crazy!

Going online (needless to say) was VERY attractive since I could stay at home, don't have to worry about the weather, and earn income.

Nowadays my primary focus is to earn enough online so that my wife can stay home and I can solely run this business full time.

      We're getting there.

    Yes.

I got into it at the start of my second year of university, hoping that by the time I graduated two years later, I'd have a steady, secure enough income from it not to need to get a job. And with a great deal of luck and a following wind, I turned out to be one of the ones who managed to achieve that aim, and in the two additional years since then, my business has gone from strength to strength. And I'm not being modest about the "luck". There is, very often, a lot of luck involved in it, as well as everything else. I got lucky in that the things I had the right existing skill-set for, before I started, turned out to be valuable and profitable ones, and I was able to learn the rest of what I needed, to earn a good living from them, after struggling for only 3 - 4 months (which I think isn't bad, as these things go?).

Very little, to be honest, because I follow a very old-fashioned business model which has been working since before the internet existed, and I just use a modernised form of it that's much easier. (Google and other search engines could de-index all my websites tomorrow and I'd still have at least 90% of my income.)

That's changed slightly, in one sense: one of the "fallback possibilities" for a career which I originally had available, if IM hadn't worked out, is no longer so suitable for me (or I'm no longer so suitable for it - same thing, really). So I have fewer plausible options, now, and IM is all the more important to me.

This has the makings of an interesting thread.

Internet Marketing has changed my life. It made me quit my day-time job and work full time online while at home. Not only that, I have also learned a lot of things I can do online that I didn't know/realize when I was still running the rat-race.

I got into IM for the money. I stuck with IM because it was there to be conquered and a means to the end. So it's a bit different I guess.

When I started I had a job I hated. This was supposed to be an exit.

And I was marred by the hype of quick and easy money.

Now I've actually got a job I love so this is a side-thing which has proven more than useful in the real world. Advertising, marketing and learning to understand our customers so we can help deliver our service better.

Plus (as time goes on) I've managed to go beyond the bright, shiny object, toddler stage and appreciate the importance of marketing fundamentals as Alexa mentioned. Which is interesting in its own right.

Today I just finished Seth Godin's "All Marketers Are Liars/Tell Stories" which changed my thinking again.

In the beginning, I got into Internet Marketing for the profit. Several years later and after a lot of disappointments, failures, sacrifices, etc...I am still into Intermet Marketing because I have learned how to make money finally and how to love this work.
